You'd be listening to a compressed audio recording that's three steps removed from the original performance. Agreed you can't tell anything over a phone, but I can hear some differences pretty well over my 27" iMac, and I can compare bad, peaky repro compared with fuller, cleaner music detail on that system without much difficulty.
