HornEd Posted December 10, 2002 Share Posted December 10, 2002 How about "Green Christmas" by Stan Freeburg... it came out in the early sixties and was a satire on Christmas commercialism. It was very popular on request music stations but seemed to get held back by the merchants who were not amused. One of the fun portions of the tune was a strident organ rendition of "Jingle Bells" that had a cash register bell sound at the end of each melodic line. I think my son or favorite ex-wife has my original recording... but it's definitely worth two ears and a tail in the annual holiday "bull" parade that provides the yearly profit margin for many a retailer. On the religious side, it's a great time to get a Handel on the "Messiah"... and the celebration of EID has just marked the end of Ramadan... but I am a little behind on Muslim music in this month fasting during daylight hours... no food, no water, no smokes and no sex until nightfall. Since Ramadan follows a lunar calendar... the month of Ramadan makes its way around the calendar. Obviously, fasting is a longer proposition when it falls in summer than when it falls when the nights are longer. Hanakuh is also fixed by date on the lunar calendar. Most Rabbi's I've heard look upon it as more of an historical memorial than a religious observance. The Hanakuh candles are lighted a day at a time to celebrate important events in Hebrew history. And, of course, Kwanza is a new holiday at this time of year... and was invented in the sixties as a way of bringing a special holiday for black peoples of the world... or so I am given to understand. Hey, wouldn't it be nice to have a holiday thread where different Forum folks discuss how their ethnic group celebrates at this time of year. But for the last 20 years or so it's been "Do You Hear What I Hear" in either vocal or intrumental form. This is kinda funny (to me anyway). Sometime in the late sixties my dad took us (5) kids to a rather small airport (max. landing weight is still 80k lbs.) to show us where he worked when he was dating my, now, mother. We pulled up in the station wagon and before too long one of the pilots hangin' around walked up to the car and asked dad if we'ed like to take a plane ride. Dad said o.k. and up went the first group. It was small single engine prop plane and it couldn't hold all of us. They came back and Mom and I went next. I was nervous as hell and sat on Mom's lap during take off. Still nervous I began to sing to calm myself down. I sang the only song I knew......"Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer". And the higher we went the louder I sang. Other people on the plane were smiling and chuckeling but I didn't care. Lately,I have been crazy about Trans-Siberian Orchestra. I love what they have done with it! I saw them in concert last month and was completely blown away! A Christmas concert that rocked! Imagine turning up your Klipsch system till your ears will start to bleed. That is what it sounded like! Crystal clear. Heavy bass I could feel going through my spine and in my chest. gary101050 Posted December 12, 2002 Share Posted December 12, 2002 My favorite, by far, is Mannheim Steamroller's rendetion of Silent Night or Stille Nacht. The children are upstairs fast asleep. Imagine sitting in your favorite loveseat with your arm around your wife or significant other by the fireplace looking out the front window with the snow falling outside very late on Christmas Eve.
