Thanks for the feedback all!

'how do you know your capacitors are not leaking if you haven't measured them electronically?'

I just meant not leaking physically, I think I can measure ESR.  I'll check...

'Some people put in an attenuator to dampen the K77 tweeter, feeling it to harsh.'

Yes it does seem to be hooked up to the tweeter, I'll try it out, both were set on maximum on arrival and I just left them there.

'If I may ask, where in Japan are You located?' I'm in Southern Nagano Prefecture in the southern Alps at just over 3,000 feet.

So I changed the capacitors (on the above recently purchased Heresy 1 from 1981) to see if there was any difference, and of course, there is a significant difference.  I just went for cheap and cheerful Dayton 2.0 uF 5% 250 V which are available here cheap and next day delivery.  I used chocolate block (terminal strip) brass (or bronze maybe) connectors so I can hot swap (kind of) capacitors and check for flavour changes later.

I noticed the sound difference immediately and the woofers are moving more dynamically (not that I am listening to thrash metal or heavy bass).  I also noted that the potentiometers on the back are indeed clearly labeled HF attenuator, and are connected to the tweeter, they didn't seem to do anything before I changed the caps but now their effect is clear.

Hello to you all.  I just found this place.  I bought a pair of Heresy speakers in 1979, when I was 19.  They are black and have a few miles on them, but have been in one place in Seattle for 35 years or so now.  I have been listening to them so long that I just take them for granted.

I originally bought them because they were efficient (meaning loud with the relatively underpowered amps of the time).  Now, I keep them because I think they still sound very good.  I suppose there are newer, better sounding speakers, but when my wife finally convinces me that they are just too physically large for where we have them now, they will go down to the basement to the office space next to my music room.

They haven't been altered in any way, and everything is still as it was in 1979.  No pictures - you all know what a black box looks like.  The logo badges fell off years ago.  That and a handful of scratches is about all that shows how old they are now.
