Vince1966 Posted November 20, 2021 Posted November 20, 2021 I’m considering a pair of cornwalls in my area. Birch raw that was stained years back, some veneer has been ripped off at the top edges. Owner says they sound great. Not sure if the grill fabric is original, at least the badges are there. What’s a reasonable offer to put to the owner? A few pictures included. Thanks for any advice. 1 Quote

Vince , How are you -tx a million for the Gift -I most definitely would want to thank you - The fabric is klipsch original , these are Cane Grilles with klipsch copper badges 1981 , the cane grilles were more expensive for sure than the regular grilles , it was a top of the line option -I am not sure if the speakers are Decorator Cornwalls since the pictures are not very clear -if these are Decorators then , the grilles were purchased later - I would open the back panel of 1 speaker , these may have the prized K55V dual phase plug midrange driver or the k51V ferrite midrange driver , the k55V dual phase plug mids driver or the K51V would certainly mean that these Cornwalls would sound amazing - pricing for Cornwalls is 1000$ for cabs in average condition , less than 1k$ would be a real bargain , the cabs have a few sections that need wood filler but it's repairable , these are fir plywood with a Birch veneer -the speakers do not have risers as they were also optional in the late 70's -early 80's , you could order the speaker pretty much the way you wanted back then - Quote
Vince1966 Posted November 20, 2021 Author Posted November 20, 2021 No problem Randy, glad they are getting use. I just sent him an offer of $900, it’s a 2 1/2 hour drive to see them but it may be worth it. I would like to put these with the Belle’s. I’m getting the Heritage Fever pretty bad. Hopefully it goes my way with these. Thanks for the Input. Vimce. 2 Quote
OO1 Posted November 20, 2021 Posted November 20, 2021 900$ , you'll get em for sure , Cornwalls are huge speakers , by the way these Cornwalls can play rock music quite well , now given the age , make sure to play some music you like when you audition them , cause the Crossovers may need new capacitors if they sound muddy , if the HF is crystal clear , then the crossovers are fine , either way , capacitors are peanuts in these B networks , 15 minutes and they are recapped for another 30 years - these are heavy , around 100lbs - -you have to open the backs of these speakers to check them out , and to make sure that what's inside is klipsch original , so K33E, k77M square magnet , k55V single or dual phase plug , the k55V dual phase plug or K51V have solder terminals , while the k55V is push pin - take out the grilles , check the woofer cone all the way around - Quote
Vince1966 Posted November 20, 2021 Author Posted November 20, 2021 Thanks Billy, maybe I should have started there. The Owner has not responded yet, hopefully he’s not feeling insulted. I have a line on a oiled oak 1980 pair and possibly some 1977 Birch LaScalas. Fingers crossed. 1 Quote
billybob Posted November 20, 2021 Posted November 20, 2021 Yes maybe he is open to offers. Not knowing what he is asking. Long road trip one way out of your local area. Should be open to knocking off some. Maybe those other 2 pair are closer and reasonable. Good hunting... Quote
Vince1966 Posted November 20, 2021 Author Posted November 20, 2021 He came back with $1150. I think I will drive the 2 hours to see the others, He seems open to offers. 1 1 Quote

Vince1966 Posted November 21, 2021 Author Posted November 21, 2021 I will, the guy with the 81 cornwalls wrote to get pictures of one of my amps for sale and is considering it for his speakers. The there guy will be back from offshore friday, he has the cornwalls and a rough pair of Birch LaScala ( his words) waiting on pictures. 1 Quote

Vince1966 Posted November 27, 2021 Author Posted November 27, 2021 Well I made it home with them. Cabinets are a little dinged up and chipped here and there. I can address that later. They sound very good, cross between my Belle’s and Heresy’s. But a lot more bottom end. 1 Quote
Vince1966 Posted November 27, 2021 Author Posted November 27, 2021 Ok, Here are some Nudies, insides look like new. I don’t think they have ever been opened and both sides are identical. I may use pieces of the inside veneer to repair the outsides and decide on fixing the finish. Tags say raw birch but they looked stained. Cain grill fabric is coming loose from the mounting board, and there are a few areas to fix. Any good advice on cleaning them. One was attempted at one point. 1 Quote
Vince1966 Posted November 28, 2021 Author Posted November 28, 2021 Thank you Billybob, I'm going to spend a few hours time listening to them tomorrow. I have some good caps on hand If I decide to recap them. I am going to mess with the finish on the bottoms tomorrow to see if I can remove some of the stain put on before repairing the veneer chips. Somewhere in my shop is a small collection of Klipsch Birch from old cabinets that were salvaged so maybe I can make some work to improve the looks. also have some Mid driver Gaskets to put in. Also picked up a few old Pioneer receivers in the deal so more stuff to play with. 1 Quote
Dave A Posted November 28, 2021 Posted November 28, 2021 Check to see if you have soldered lug K-55-V's on your mid horn. The markings on the back of those drivers sure look like you do and if so they are the best ones. Quote
Vince1966 Posted November 28, 2021 Author Posted November 28, 2021 Hi Dave, I believe they are solder lug, I did not grab a picture before I closed them up. Anyone know what the "R" stamp indicates on the mid? Quote
