Live Music Mosh Pit

Now I've long since come to the conclusion that folks here like to listen to music.  I also suspect, that you like to listen to more than just recorded music.

For example, your Thebsian raconteur started his live music journey at age 14 listening to Simon and Garfunkel at the Syracuse War Memorial.  A few years later he became a lot of what he is today after stopping into a small rural event called Woodstock.

While the degree of enthusiasm has waxed and waned over the years, I still very much enjoy live music. Not as many local bands as I got older, but mid-to-larger up to ginormous bands as opportunity and thickness of my wallet allowed me to.

So, I've decided to start a little thread where we can post live music as we go along.  A sort of what live music are we listening to right now, or thereabouts.

I'll start the ball rolling with my most recent concerts.

Two Saturdays ago I had the pleasure of listening to Dave Bromberg and His Big Band at The Birchmere a legendary small hall in Alexandria Virginia.  This was his "Spirit of 76 Tour" celebrating his age.  He still has those great lyrics and that magic warble in his voice.

Then last Saturday, I had the privilege of hearing that 81 year old Motown legend, Smoky Robinson, at the mid-size concert hall in the MGM Casino and Hotel in Oxon HiIl, MD.  He not only still has it, but he's teaching himself spanish and is recording a "cd" (his words not mine) in spanish.  He even sang us a song off of it. "Tears of a Clown" still makes me happy/bouncy.

So what live music have you been listening to lately?

I refuse to pay the extravagant fees that concerts demand. The first concert I attended was Steppenwolf in 1969. That show was $4.00 in advance and $5.00 at the door. Now cheap seats are well over $100.00. Back then the promoter paid for tickets, and promotion. Now we have middle men with their hands out to pay. No I’ll buy CDs and listen at home.

My nephew and I just watched MASTODON perform at the Harrah's Cherokee center in Asheville, NC. Great show..!! We've seen them twice together, and the first time was 4 years ago at TheRitz in Raleigh,NC... At Harrah's Asheville again, we saw PRIMUS on their "Farewell to Kings" tour, where they perform RUSH's album "Farewell to Kings" in its entirety. It was fantastic.!

I actually went to Red Rocks for the first time when I was in Denver for Halloween visiting my sister. I attended both nights of DEADMAU5 Nov 4&5. RedRocks is by far the most spectacular venue I have ever been privileged to see live music in, absolutely gorgeous.

Hadn't heard any live music in awhile, but last Tuesday I got to experience a sold out St. Paul and the Broken Bones concert at the historic black venue, the Lincoln Theater in Washington,DC. Great concert and it always amazes me that he has not blown out his voice the way he sings.

Then last night I  went to a packed house at the Brihcmere in Alexandria, VA for a Motown Review, which was 9 piece band with a total of nine singing performers. Only shortcoming was no female covers from MoTown's vast female repertoire.
