Crossover Capacitors and Crossovers In General

Recommended Posts

I wouldn't say they are easy to find, you certainly have less options for non-standard values but they are out there. The toughest one is certainly 13uF.

One could always parallel an 8.2uF and 4.7uF to get darn close enough to 13uF. Panasonic ECQ polyester caps I was using in amplifiers for a while and they are fantastic. They are metalized but so isn't the JEM Tecate caps. Best part is all 4 caps to do two networks is only $10.

I have used similar caps as these Panasonic's in crossovers and I thought they sounded pretty good. However, in some audio circles, these type of caps are "crap" and you're an idiot if you think they are good.

They are only "crap" because the price is so low.  Panasonic makes and sells so many the price gets lowered, it has nothing to do with the quality. I'm sure you are aware of this.

Again, notice how 2.0uF, 3uF, 5uF, and 13uF are non-standard values. These are wound for Klipsch and not listed on their data sheet.

I can't imagine this particular metallized polyprop cap is anything special compared to a WIMA or other good name brand metallized polyprop cap. Bennic private labels for a lot of customers and they seem to have a good reputation for OEM's.

What led you to these caps Dean?

They are what Klipsch uses. They are 5% tolerance, come in the exact values I need, and are available. That’s all the “special” I need for this. Also, keep in mind that if I’m going to advertise a “Klipsch” network - well - along with the parts, there is a certain aesthetic that goes along with that.
