Heresy restoration question

Recommended Posts

Greetings,

I am restoring a pair of Heresy I speakers that will require a new pair of woofers. The replacement will be the Klipsch K28e, which is also found in the Heresy III & IV (the III is sealed, while the IV is ported).

The restoration project will keep the original, sealed configuration. By my calculation, without any damping material (like the Heresy I originally was designed), the K28e with give a Q of about .9 which leaves the system a little under damped (if .7 is the goal).

My question is how much damping does the Heresy III have?  I would be interested to know the material, the size, the thickness, and how it is placed in the cabinet. I figure Klipsch has correctly figured out the correct damping for the K28e in a Heresy cabinet, so the information should be helpful for a proper restoration.

Also, I am quite willing to buy the part (foam damping) from Klipsch if they sell it.

Thank you, kindly,

Andy

  • Klipschguy changed the title to Heresy restoration question

I don't know anything about speaker design

but I would try one inch of the synthetic fill fabric from any fabric store

laid in the bottom of the unit with a few extra inches up the sides.

Should reduce reflection and standing waves,

resonance may still be an issue if the speakers are screaming, mine seldom are above 1 watt

See if you can hear the difference with mono, one speaker with fabric

use the balance control back and forth

My2 cents ........

Replacing my H1 crossovers made a noticeable difference

could have been 40 year old oil caps

or the dry rotted gaskets on the squaker

I have built many speakers and based on my previous builds that works well if required is

The only part of the cabinet that needs insulation is the sides back and top - nothing on the front and bottom of the cabinet

Good question

not sure the tweeter or mid horn generates much energy inside the enclosure

wouldn't the woofer in a 360 pattern

not sure how hard it punches towards the rear

seems like a good measurement exercise

perhaps a hocky puck at just the right spot ........

I  use  the Heresy 1  with the  k-28 or   K-22  ..... 0 damping , 0 modifications   , however if I  would have added  any damping ,  I would have used  a standard  foam piece U  shaped .. 1   inch  thick ,  placed  loose  around the woofer just like klipsch do   in multiple other speakers .

They aren’t at the house.  It’ll be a few months.. lol

Foam goes from the bottom, up over the woofer and down the other side.  It’s deeper than the cabinet and folds over the woofer magnet from the top and sides as well.

This thread talks about heresy foam:

Winglet,

Thank you for the thread; it was informative, however I did not see anything regarding the Heresy III’s damping configuration (a bit of a mystery).

Respectfully,

Andy

III have foam as well..

Probably identical to the II, as the II to III upgrade kit does not include it
