Hoju
which of the two produces better sound quality and what are the differences?
Jack Gvozdjak
Intrested as well... What exactly is a IMG woofer composed of? Thanks!
Norm Mowry
What exactly is a IMG woofer composed of? From Klipsch' support FAQ, question #3: "IMG refers to a type of material used for speaker cones. It stands for Injection Molded Graphite." tommyboy
Put it this way. Have you ever upgraded car speakers? If so, didn't it sound WAY better? Stock car speakers, among others like Blose speakers, are all made of paper. Even if you didn't notice an audible sound diff, paper simply wouldn't last as long............ russ69
Treated paper is an excellent material for speakers. It's light and reasonably stiff. Is it better than IMG, I don't know without having the properties available. Thanx, Russ
Blvdre
The Altec 515 is an excellent (and expensive) woofer, treated paper. It all depends on the execution.
Don Richard
Paper cones, which are usually paper mixed with other materials, are naturally better damped than a lot of cones made of stiffer materials. It would be wrong to generalize loudspeaker drivers based only on materials of construction. YMMV.
HDBRbuilder
I agree with Don. Anybody who emphatically states that IMG will outlast paper is living in a dreamworld. Let's just wait about 50 years and see if that IMG woofer cone is still pliable, or will it become more brittle over time?? I would bet the 50 year old paper cone will outperform it! Now, IMG MAY OUTLAST an OVERDRIVEN paper cone, due to its tendency to not rip like paper can...but...just as in foam surrounds as opposed to corrugated paper surrounds...time will tell! tommyboy
Well, I stand corrected. I'm learning a lot from this thread. I would have never thought that paper would outlast something "stronger" in essence. I just figured that factory car speakers never last very long, so.............. HDBRbuilder
Tommyboy, you are corrrect in that most car speakers DON'T last very long, but that is likely due to a number of factors that MOST high quality home audio systems are NOT subjected to...such as being overdriven, temperature and humidity extremes and rapid changes to temperature and humidity, etc... Remember when the be all and end all to canoes was the ABS plastic hulled ones?? Let them be subjected to direct sunlight, temperature and humidity extremes, etc, and they will lose their plyability over a few years, BUT a well-cared for aluminum canoe or heavy fiberglass hulled canoe will still be rocking those rapids long after an old ABS canoe has become brittle and split from stem to stern. Think about it!

Klipsch Employees Trey Cannon Posted December 31, 2008 Klipsch Employees Share Posted December 31, 2008 Paper is better. It just sounds better. Lower res. frequency. Doped with a rubber surround is about as good as it gets.

colterphoto1
Plus I'm sure that IMG (fancy word for plastic) is cheaper to manufacture.
