What about my idea of having a few of us who got to hear the new La Scala back in March or the new subs at SubFest on as guests?  🙂

I think Roy tapped a couple of the Museum Trustees who were there after your suggestion.

All questions from here have been submitted to @Chief bonehead and live stream panel.

Was hoping for some meat on the subwoofer bone.  Sometime next year isn't much to live on.

Win those AL6’s, you get to order the first Heritage Dub which will roll out way before they are launched.

Lots of people have been wanting them for years.

Will the AL6 E crossover have a "subwoofer out" and be volume controlled by The Preamp?  If so, will there be a way to time delay the sub?

Will the AL6 E crossover be RCA output only?

There is more than one sub option, How will the AL6 E Crossover know which sub it is so that the "magical EQ by Roy" can be implemented?

If there is no sub out on the E Crossover, will we just need the EQ information to program into our own crossover or DSP amp?

What is Roy's favorite whiskey drink?

Only got part way through this, will finish during the Q & A.

run a jumper on Z1 (standby circuit)...google for pictures

been there done that.... installed tiny toggle switch on back panel wired across Z1 but I still want it to sleep with no signal. Like if I forget when called away to flick the switch. If left on for prolonged period they get too hot.

Roy has recently announced some major new improvements during his development of the AL6.

There will be a new Listening Lounge with Roy, Mike Dyer, Matt and Mark. I will post date and time/flyer in a minute.

MAJOR UPDATE

They had a KMAH meeting this past Monday Re: giveaway of Beta pair AL6, Roy’s update on new direction on the development of the new AL6 La Scala, and the AL6 being the focus (auditioned) during a Chief Bone Head class in November.

First, Roy said during the meeting that he decided to implement changes in the bass bin/dog house to get bottom end to a solid 40 hZ. He apparently has succeeded with that  (the -3dB point is even lower). He is even figuring out an upgrade path from an AL5 to an AL6 bass bin.

The drawing will be for the AL6 with the all of these new improvements, and it will be both passive (includes the two balancing networks) and active XO.

Roy made statements during the meeting like “I’m really pumped about what we have done and how this is sounding,” “I have always had a soft spot about the La Scala, and really wanted to take it to the next level.”

There will be a Listening Lounge in a few weeks (I will post flyer) that will cover: the drawing, what the AL6 will be, bass bin updates, and the Chief Bonehead Education Class (Active vs. Passive) in November.

I will update the thread on the AL6 [that’s is this post] and create a thread on the Chief Bonehead Class, and will cross-reference each topic (sorry in advance for any confusion resulting from 3 different things going on at same time).

Any questions, you can post here. Suggestions or comments  send them by PM here, or email to travis@klipschmuseum.org.

I took an 80s vintage La Scala, replaced the t-35 tweeter diaphragms and tri-amped them. I crossed over and processed with a Carvin XD-360. I time aligned and eq'd too It made a huge difference. QSC class  A/B amps were plenty of power for this incredibly efficient system. They (flown) are now the main PA speakers in our church. Interestingly I tried a JBL 2226 for the woofer and that did not work well at all. The original paper cone (Jensen?) worked much better.

This new AL6/7 really changes a bunch with the (12") woofer chamber now ported and the horn going over to a tractrix with the new driver configuration. Tri-Amping is always better than the passive and leaves much more adjustability to the system. The new active system here should bring new performance to an older design!

Porting the woofer chamber: Back when I was at Universal Studios, they had "Sensurround" Subwoofers with 18" woofers made by Cerwin Vega. We "found" these "W" bass-horn boxes under the stage at the Hitchcock Theater. I tested and found they were really 60hz boxes unless you extended the mouth about 9 feet!...as they did have extensions to do that. But their sealed woofer chamber was 9 cubic feet. So I modeled it and added an 8~10" round port and tuned to 25 hz. Then added a LR crossover and parametric EQ and walla, I had a pretty tight 25HZ .1 channel subwoofer for film! It was not as tight as a fully horn-loaded sub, but much better than your average bass reflex box. So ya, porting the woofer chamber works well!
