First Post - Question Concerning Klipsch Heresy II Speakers

Recommended Posts

Thanks in advance. I am an old man of 75 years and I have been a "sound" nut since I was 6 or so when I got my first crystal radio which I could only get 1 AM station on. I got addicted to good sound through a buddy of mine who's father had a large room with very high end Hi Fi stuff ....... yes HiFi. I about 1958 or so I can remember them spending over $300 for a German made turn table that was designed to play only 1 record at a time. I think the father of my friend converted from HiFi vinyl to Stereo in about late 1958 or 1959. Stereo brought their "sound room" to another dimension.  I played a trumpet for 8 years or so and remembering my junior and senior years and what it sounded like to set in the middle of a 162 piece orchestra which was our District Honors musical group and some of you that know can see where the addiction began. I have never heard a sound like that other than listening to some of my tunes on Spotify Premium with my Sony WH-1000XM4 headphones on......pretty decent sound.

I designed and built every stick of a Gambrel roof (midwest barn design) some 35 years ago.  It is not large in comparison to other shops, but it is 28'x36' 2 story and it is an ok size for me.  I would like to have a shop as large as a football field under roof, but so be it. I am a retired shop teacher and mainly collect, restore, and utilize vintage wood and metalworking machinery. This is where most of my sound system is set up. The acoustics in my shop are lousy, but I try to make the best of it.

I have had a lot of mixed stereo stuff that I bought at mostly garage sales over the years including B&O, high end Pioneer, Sony, etc. with 22 speakers (counting tweeters, mids, woofers, sub woofer, etc.) and I currently push those with  a Technics SA-EX600. I mainly listen to a selection of a few thousand songs which I have gathered over the years and placed on numerous play lists on Spotify Premium. This Sat. I  purchased a pair of Klipsch Heresy II speakers and a pair of Klipsch Synergy B-2 Bookshelf Loudspeakers.

My question is this: Will the Heresy 2s distort if I lay them down end to end (with the horns outward) and placed horizontally on top of wall cabinets? If not I plan to "angle them down" since they would be about 6.5' off the floor.

Thanks in advanced ~ Dan

Just keep in mind that when you put a speaker with different horizontal and vertical horn coverage patterns (in the case of the Heresy it's 90° horizontal and 60° vertical) on its side, then the coverage patterns are going to flip.  It will now have wide coverage vertically and narrow coverage horizontally.  This can potentially cause issue.  First, when placed up high as you plan to, ceiling reflections will be worse.  If they are not towed in, the desired listening position could be outside the horizontal coverage of one or both speakers depending on the geometry of the situation.

If you could place them vertically with the tweeters on the bottom, like they do in the Chipotle restaurant installations (https://www.klipsch.com/blog/klipsch-install-stories-chipotle-adds-heresy-iii), it might be better.  Try both orientations and compare how they sound.

And welcome to the forum.

I don't know what you mean by "lay them down end to end" but you have to live within the limitations of your listening space.

So place them within the limits of your room and enjoy them. They'll only distort if overdriven or if the amp clips. Your ears

will be ringing long before then!

Thanks for all of your opinions.

By placing them end to end I mean lay them on their sides and butt the two together up on a top of cabinets as that is all the room I have in this particular location.  My shop is 28' wide and I have a set of speaker cabinets that have 10" woofers with mids and tweeters that are of less quality and I would like to place the Klipsch Heresy 2s in there place. I could rearrange that entire end wall of my shop, but that would take several hours and the loss of some of my other collectables displays. The other lesser speakers are cabinet speakers that were designed to stand vertical but they have been butted together in a horizontal manner for a couple of decades and have sounded good, but I think the Klipsch Heresy 2s would sound  much better.

I am going to place the Heresy 2s up there tomorrow, but my question now is do I butt the 12" woofer cabinet ends together and have the horns "outboard" or the opposite of this with the horn ends of the cabinets butted together.

Thanks again for having patience with an old man that never knew much about acoustics other than by trial and error. ~ Dan

There may be a bit less comb filtering (interference) of correlated sound (the "center image" sound, i.e., the same sound coming from both speakers in stereo material) if you place the tweeter horns "outboard".

I have my Heresy IIs on some 40 inch high boxes, as you want - on their sides with the tweeters on the outside. They sound great in my room.

Enjoy the ride! At 75 we're just getting started.

I've done it this way for years, with my H1's.

Long ago,I used scrap plywood, and angled them down,so as the top sides were touching the ceiling, but 20 years ago,I tossed 'em,.. figuring I could make something nicer.

But they sound great to me this way.

I have a single HII mounted as you describe, it’s used as a Center in a 5.1.2 capable system, and it sounds good no issues. Admittedly, it’s not enabled for critical listening, but with movies, games, & multi-channel music; it serves that purpose well. I say go for it.  Be careful getting them up there, they are cumbersome.

I really appreciate all of the advice, pictures, knowledge, etc. I am in the process of revamping my speaker wiring to the area where I plan to place the Heresy 2s. I did bench test them and they sound good, but still haven't used them in the mix of speakers I currently have including a sweet sounding pair of large / vintage Sansui cabinet speakers. I plan to work on these tasks in a day or 2. Again I really appreciate all of you. Good sound is great "sport" and as mentioned I really ......really appreciate good music played through good sound systems. Sadly my friend that I mentioned learning from when we were kids in his father's sound room has passed away a few months ago.......I know he had a lot of very high end sound equipment, but I didn't even ask about any of it as it needs to be handed down to his family. Our son also likes good sound and I plan to pass on what I have which isn't much to him. Just because it is old and interesting and has sentimental value, he has his grandma and grandpa's old crank-up Victrola and a large collection of records that they started out with back in the 1930s. I still have my old Baylor Deluxe 8 AM transistor radio that I got for Christmas in about 1959 or so and it still works fine ....... sorry for drifting back in time, but I will mention in closing that I have a rather odd ball piece of "old musical machinery" and that is I have an original / never been installed / still new in the old cardboard box with associated paper work ..... A.R.C. 45 RPM car record player that was made to mount under the dash of your "cruzzer"........can you imagine trying to listen to "Blueberry Hill" on that unit while traveling down a rough road on a summer night with the windows down because you had no air conditioning .....because your old chopped top 50 Merc had none??? but it didn't matter cause you had your right arm around you gal and havin more fun than the rich folks..........I didn't have this unit when I was a kid, my first car was an old 1937 Ford 4-door with a tube AM in it........but man-O-man my second car was a 1962 Chevy Nova 2-door hardtop that I bought and rebuilt in 1967 and I bought a brand new Muntz 4 track tape player for it ........ yes I said 4 track ....some of you "youngsters" won't believe that.....Thanks again and have a great weekend. ~ Dan
