John kal Posted August 1, 2024 Posted August 1, 2024 Hi, Tech question here. I was listening to some tunes last night and today, the left speaker sounds like it is playing slightly lower with less bass and not as clear mids. I switched them over to another SS receiver and had the same problem. Bass is not thumping or hitting as hard as the other one. It still plays but sounds a bit muffled or lower. Not as out there as I'm used too. Question is now, could it be the crossover has to be checked. Something maybe came loose or defective cap or resistor? I don't know if they have been serviced and when it was done. I have Crites tweeters and that's about it. Thanks. Quote
avguytx Posted August 2, 2024 Posted August 2, 2024 Did you swap the actual speakers from one location to the other? Swap the speakers around just to see. What about source inputs? Did you swap those? Does this on all sources? Quote

CWOReilly Posted August 2, 2024 Posted August 2, 2024 Check the jumpers on the input jacks. I’ve known of them to vibrate loose. Also if you have a meter check the ohms on each speaker. @John kal Quote

I will remove the crossover and check the caps and see what's happening. 1 Quote

avguytx Posted August 2, 2024 Posted August 2, 2024 At this point, I think your best bet at this point is to get to the crossovers and visually inspect them for any damage. Have you had these long or are they a recent purchase? I know when I traded for a couple pairs of Epic CF-3's a couple years back, I had one pair of crossovers with a couple of burnt resistors on them as they had apparently been ran hard. If I'm not mistaken, the crossovers are literally part of the terminal cups on those like the Epics on very crowded boards. Should be super easy to just unscrew them to inspect and take photos. My personal rule of thumb is, if I do something to one side, do the same to the other or you may end up with varying results again. Quote

Great speaker. I'll tear into them this evening and hopefully I will have a cap burnt or out of spec. Maybe a loose connection. Not sure what to expect. I'll post some pics of the progress. 2 Quote
John kal Posted August 3, 2024 Author Posted August 3, 2024 Hey guys, I fixed the problem. Nothing big but I'm glad it was a bad solder joint on the smaller capacitor. Not sure why he soldered it underneath? I soldered it in series on top of the 1uf capacitor on top. I forgot to take a picture. They're playing now and sound fantastic. Now all drivers sound perfect. Glad I know a bit about repairing this stuff. Thanks for the advice. 3 Quote
Ceptorman Posted August 3, 2024 Posted August 3, 2024 That's got to be a good feeling. Rock on! 1 Quote
