John kal
So I found this pair online and was wondering for the price are they worth to get them ($1600 Canadian). I asked the seller to explain what was done the speaker. All that extra crap wood on the exterior is a joke. Now, if I were to get them and fix or redo the exterior of both of them and repaint them ( a great fall project), would this affect any value in the long run, in case I wanted to sell them? Not sure of the date, but he says all the drivers are good. " from the add....Moving, and I don’t think I have room for these. Listed as a four in condition because they no longer match as one has been partially refinished with butternut and ash. All wood added to outside and I do not believe this has impacted its sound, either at all or negatively. The original crossover is still present but a newer crossover was added by someone who specializes in this vintage Klipsch Crossover modifications (this is the regular variety not the h”high slope” version. As can be seen, the modified unit had a different replacement tweeter put in, but these speaker are being sold with the perfectly functioning two original tweeters as well as both of the replacement tweeters (one obviously would still need to be installed. I can help with removal from house and loading but these units must be picked up at Tenpenny Road in Val-des-Monts, about 30 minutes north of the Ottawa/Gatineau bridges. I am firm on the asking price. It is not easy even thinking about selling these, yet here I am doing just that." hanksjim1
That's about what they're worth in current condition (mismatched) IMO...I'd replace whichever tweeter you like best with the same unit and just listen to them for awhile. I know he says he is firm on price, but if he is moving, he is likely open to a quick cash sale. The added woodwork doesn't really add much value. Probably returning that unit to stock and matching the black one would bring value north of $2K Canadian (again IMO as far as resale)...I am about 20 miles form the border, but on the "left" coast, your local values could be higher... The issue I'm thinking is how much work and cash is involved to get the cabinets back to stock looking condition? Remove the added wood, fill in the holes from whatever is holding them, if it's bonded with glue that's another headache.
mark1101
Those look like a pair of original ALK universal networks. Cleaned up those could bring $500 + by themselves.
John kal
Anyone know the Date of manufacturing of these boxes?
CWOReilly
Labor of love. You could sell the extra parts. If you can do all the work I’d say worth it. 1

Withing my budget, which is low to begin with.

opnly bafld
Have a look here at "3. La Scala" timeline and changes (not many in the years you mention). 1
geoff.
@John kal Here in Canada you would be paying over a grand for just the tweeters and the crossovers, IF you were lucky enough to find a pair of ALK Universals cheap. As mentioned those are the earlier ALK Universals with better parts than what is currently being offered for $500 USD (685 CDN!) and the SMAHL tweeters are $325 USD (445 CDN!). Those prices do not include shipping and customs ! You are practically getting everything else for $500. That's a go from where I sit, which is in front of a pair of beat up LSI Splits with the same tweeters and a DIY ALK Universal clone. 4

I'm more skeptical of the work on the cabinets that has to be done.

billybob1
Condition versus price a consideration. After you can access the cabinets by photos to your satisfaction, you can determine if you want to pursue this early pair. Mismatched pair in dusty condition, you may have some room for negotiation, considering time on the market. A local US pair in decent condition can readily fetch 1500 American dollars presently. Welcome!
Dave MacKay
Run and buy them. They’re a steal. I paid CAD $2800 nearly 3 years ago for a pair. I repaired and refinished the cabinets myself, which was an enjoyable project.

I'll have to think about the complications if any would come about. Do you still have them after your repairs?
