I repaired the damage to the cabinets with wood filler and bonds, then laminated 3/8” baltic birch to the top, bottom, and sides. I then applied a ribbon Sapele veneer and used Rubio Monocoat “Pure” as the finish.
Ceptorman
It really depends on the difficulty in removing that extra wood he applied. It could be glued, screwed, nailed on, and removing it could be extremely difficult. You could be starting over with a new cabinet on that one. OTOH it could come off easily, sand them both down and apply whatever topcoat you like, then you have a good buy on a pair of great speakers. I'll bet of you were to listen to them, you would buy them.

I might take the 2-1/2 hour drive and go listen to them, if they're still around. If not I'll surely wait for a better cosmetically looking set.
MookieStl
I had a pair in very rough condition. They were pulled out of a fraternity. Guy that bought them decided against attempting the refurb. Due to the condition of the cabinets, I chose duratex to hide imperfections. Thought about veneer but these were going to be a mobile pair for events. Bondo, wood filler.....duratex. turned out nice enough and sound great. Added some aluminum angle to give it more of the industrial look. Still have them, still use them regularly. Not everyone likes this look or not for their living room. Still an option and I like the look. I even have a pair of LSI splits that have the same "look"

That's something I would do.

Plus when done right, can look very good. Its all about the sound.
