Iteachstem
Hello all, Yes, I am in my purging mode. Up for your consideration is a highly upgraded pair of Quartets. Crites x-over ($325), Crites titanium tweeters ($82), Extra cabinet bracing between the woofer and mid, upgraded woofers, refinished cabinets in a beautiful rich finish! All active drivers are in perfect condition. The passives are in very good condition. Both grills are in excellent shape, they have been washed and have their badges. These have been adult owned, cared for and listened to in a pet and smoke free home. I have well over $600 in upgrades into these. If you're on the forum, you know the value of these. Audition at time of purchase to verify they work flawlessly. Included is a bourbon tasting if you so desire. Asking $750 Included is a bourbon tasting if you so desire while auditioning these! Panatomic
Ha! Yes! I came upon the "Iteachstem" and saw "illinois" and wondered, is that the guy I just bought my Quartets from? Why yes! The speakers are set up. Goal number one has been achieved: these play louder without the sound falling apart than anything I have ever heard in my home. Well, my old EV Sentry IIs were in the same ballpark, but did not have the bass. I believe at this point at high volume the room itself is distorting the sound rather than the speakers. When I turned down the volume to rational levels for some critical listening I realized I had to take a break to let my ears recover. So, that was fun but I'll now take it easy to preserve my hearing. Sort of like having a car that can go 130mph--it's fun to unwind it once or twice but probably good to leave it at that. I am very happy that these do great close to the wall including in a corner. The bass remains tight. On low thumpy bits such as If I Were You by kd lang on All You Can Eat, my Dynaudios give a heavy bloated fump fump while the Quartets stay tight and reveal discrete tones and textures in the low range while still delivering satisfying thump. And that is when they are like four inches from the back wall! Back to considering the sound at rational volumes, including low volumes, I am curious what these would sound like with new original-spec tweeter diaphragms instead of the Crites Tis. The treble overall is not bright or harsh, but I do detect a hint of a metallic high-frequency edge occasionally. Backdating the diaphragms seems like an easy thing to try and not expensive. Thoughts? Do these Tis have a lot of hours on them, do they still need some break-in? My acid test for treble is Cowboy Junkies, Sweet Jane on The Trinity Session (a great CD btw, wonderful for quiet-time listening). Towards the end of the song there is a ting-ting-ting on the ride cymbal. When reproduced right you can feel the texture of the drumstick tip against the grooved metal of the cymbal. With a lot of setups it is recessed. With these it is ok, comparable to the Dynaudios, but not the best I've heard which was through B&W CDM7NTs and a borrowed Threshold preamp, both of which are long gone. But that is a very specific test. Overall these are fun and I am enjoying them.
