John Booth
I have a pair of 1980’s La Scalas that have been in storage for about a decade. They worked fine before I put them in storage. Is it likely that they need restoration because of the lengthy time of inactivity? And could the speakers damage an amp if I were to test them out? Any advice appreciated. Thanks! hanksjim1
Just be sure the +/- hookup wires from the amp/receiver don't touch each other...you'll be fine. My 1954 Khorns were original and worked just fine after sitting for 20 years. That being said, I would start at low volumes and check with your ear near each driver to confirm operation to be sure. Also, many suggest you loosen and tighten each wiring screw in the crossovers before turning on, just to rule out loose or corroded connections, if any issues should arise. The drivers should be fine, others may recommend replacing capacitors in the crossover networks, if you haven't done that before storing. Capacitors out of spec shouldn't harm anything. They may take a few days of music played through them to fully "open up", particularly the woofers/bass.
Klipsch Employees Trey Cannon Posted September 9 Klipsch Employees Share Posted September 9 Most issues are found in the screw terminals. Loose and need cleaning...contact cleaner and a pencell erasure can do a good job. Only if the caps are leaking fluid or have leaked, would you need to change the caps. Inductors are just wire, so no worry there. Connect them to an amp and have fun. I use my 1979 LS as my center....
