johnknovack Posted September 10, 2024 Posted September 10, 2024 got these 301s with crites ti tweets and sonicap upgrade. harsh/bright. i determined that the tweets were wired with polarity reversed. fixed that. did extreme toe in about 3 feet from walls, focused about two feet in front of seat. not bad, still harsh. just moved them against the front wall with slight toe in. much better. surprised how much less harshness with this change. 2 Quote
billybob1 Posted September 10, 2024 Posted September 10, 2024 Welcome @johnknovack... you did good about against wall. Both models front ports good for that. Experiment with placement, size of room, distance apart. Others here have those of course. @JohnJ got a pair recently. Some capacitors can create harsh for tweeters, mids. Original capacitors maybe the answer... Congrats and enjoy. 2 Quote
JohnJ Posted September 11, 2024 Posted September 11, 2024 Yessirre@billybob1 They have a very tall & wide dispersion of the "behind a horn" tweeter and mid range. 75 degrees vertical and 85 in width. My 301As need to get out of my office/media room that isn't even 11 X 11 into the den. But I took the door off of the room and the 85wpc will carry it across my acre!! ROCK ON! I'll say that the precision and character of the mids & highs resemble the LaScala's sound. I'll second that welcome @johnknovack ! 2 Quote

JohnJ Posted September 11, 2024 Posted September 11, 2024 I do wish they could sound more like the LS But the sub was retired! 1 Quote

I believe that is the sound of the exponential k-601 horn- I prefer the Chorus 1's with a good sub over the Chorus II's because of the midrange. 2 1 Quote
johnknovack Posted September 13, 2024 Author Posted September 13, 2024 (edited) originally had ‘em hooked up to a quad 909/99 pre setup. switched that out for a sansui 881 that sounded warmer and smoother, quite good. then i broke out my reconditioned lafayette 236a, rated 18 pp el84 watts per side. BINGO. phono stage works just fine as well. haven’t turned that amp on in a few years, ran it twelve hours yesterday, quiet as a mouse, all the output i will ever need. really great rig. i’ve got 600$ into the amp/speakers. kinda impossible to beat.
