Another failed FEMA response..
FEMA's most powerful and far reaching ability is not to help with disasters... it's strongest influence is to suspend The Rights of it's Citizens.

yep, just another day in the era of science and fiction.

Josh had told me FEMA had supplies there within two days, if not faster. You been reading some fiction somewhere?

And his town is the largest in the county with about 2400 people.

We had folks with Baptist relief missions here within two days.

I believe FEMA had some administrative staff showing relatively early but didn’t start operations at that point in time.

Some friends of ours that live outside of town had bags of food delivered by some marines and or national guard folks, I don’t know if that was coordinated by FEMA or not.

the vast majority of road clearing was done by private folks with chainsaws and farming equipment.

our local LEO and FD have done a good job of coordinating with legitimate volunteer orgs and other rescue teams from out of state.

Our parish in Linville has been able to receive helicopter drops with a ton of donations and we are working to get those distributed to the parishioners and neighbors that need them here in Spruce Pine and the surrounding areas.

They were also able to set up a medical clinic today for doctors visits and some medication prescription options for those that need it.

https://www.stlucienbernadette.org/

We got our power back today.

No word on water and sewer.

So far I’ve received word of two friends/acquaintances that were killed in the flooding and that number is probably going to rise as time goes on.

Still lots of work to be done cleaning up the town and rebuilding the infrastructure.

Just glad you're safe and almost back to abby-normal.  Sounds like it's gonna take a lon time to sort but it will.  Just crazy!   :)

Here's how this stuff works

Think flow chart.

Whatever, comes from county to state, Gov signs off, each state's NG mobilizes and starts heading out.  That happens w/in 24 hours usually.  Hence choppers, etc military.  Wherever & however they can get in.

The Gov has notified DC and FEMA along w/the NWService were  on it prior to the destruction.  It was all over major brodcasting nets.

President signs off to bring in FEMA, who by the way, come in from all over the US to work.  Takes travel time.

Factor in getting food and supplies into the first responders and victoms?  The Guard is running every piece of equipment needed into the area, which, for the most part, have zero roads.

Here's another thing I've seen first hand.  The do-gooders.  Yea, I get it.  Sure it works and that's great.  But if it doesn't work who do they call?  I've seen it happen.

If you're a NG pilot in a complete med-evac helicopter on your last run loaded cause you need fuel.  What do ya do when ya get ANOTHER life or death call 80 miles off flight path and ur carrying one already?  Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.   There will be blow-back either way it's handled.

Gottom line is, it's a state mission directed by each county with guidance from FEMA.  Ya work with them on a the entire plan to get back to normal asap.

That's exactly how it rolls.  Carry on!  :)

Well,

now-a-days they won't drive around a road closed sign, when everyday Dick & Janes can get through that way. Regime arrested a helicopter pilot who brought in donated supplies.

Regime shows after a certain so-in-so does every time. Then they get in the way to impede & regulate. And where do my taxes go?

I know the resourceful folks here could see that if they bothered to look past a certain portion of the media.

The lack of/slowness of/disdain for the response disgusts me.

Fwiw, I think too many people are trained/conditioned to blame the media and NOT try to make government services better through cooperation....This ain't FEMA's first rodeo and the loudest voices against them are those who seem to not want the system  to work.

The loud voices about this failure are because it is a failure when it shouldn't be. When it wouldn't ever have been in modern times. :( Cooperation? Destroyed from the top down.

Now Milton with 175mph sustained is headed just a couple hundred miles south. Map shows it taking I-4 from Tampa Bay to Daytona. Scary.

The first week is always complete chaos until roads are somewhat cleared.

Not unusual to control the air space either. This is for safety reasons.

Governors from four states have publicly stated that FEMA has given them everything they’ve needed.

I think most people here know that it takes a bit longer for FEMA to get set up.

The early days are usually best served by the locals and literal first responders.

But, a disaster of this magnitude is always dealt with in the longer term.

A friend of mine and @Marvel ‘s works for FEMA and he has been up in Alaska off and on for several years after the earthquakes that disrupted a lot of their infrastructure.

It looks like my internet is back up and running so I might be on here a bit more over the next few days.

or not.

This will sound like alarmist nonsense to most here, but loss of habitat is the primary cause of extinction in the animal kingdom, and we aren’t exempt. Expect a lot of climate related migration in the next decade.

I pulled up a good discussion from 2019 that sheds light on the dilemma of what's FEMA's obligation verses Insurance coverage.

It is only going to get worse. People can't fight and win against mother nature.  Relocation may become a necessity.

Yup. If places can't be insured then maybe you build elsewhere if you can't afford to recoup the loss. That's my take.

Not at all alarmist and actually something we want folks in Government to consider like war, epidemics, and outside invaders of all types that could affect our life and economy.

Yea ever since the Earth's axis rotated in those two years with all the YUGE earthquakes (Fukushima, Peru, +)

The ordinary compass became less trustworthy and weather's affected. All we had before were slight fluctuations predicted by scientists back when science was their primary objective.

If it hasn't been wiped from the www you might find info. For me? The place I had lived more at than not since 1966 had the morning sun directly hit the north side of the house for the first time ever! It still did when I left it in 2020.

You do the math! ^_^
