KT88
Thank you for this friendly, pleasant and very informative session, Roy. I was very impressed when I understood correctly that the graph of the new vs. old LS Bass was raw data, without any boost. Does that mean that you can actively go even lower than about 40Hz when boosting the lowest freq. which are still there? I ask because the Underground Jubilee actually also decreases at 40 Hz but can have an active boost at 32 Hz without ports. I know that the horn of the UJ is longer than the horn of the LaScala and we are therefore talking about different cutoff frequencies. Basically, my question is whether you can boost a ported bass horn in the same way as a non-ported bass horn? It's a question out of pure curiosity. Because I find your result as it is now extremely impressive! I have also been making music in bands for 50 years, and there is a dramatic difference between a speaker that can handle the fundamental of a bass guitar's low E and one that can't. For me personally, about 40 Hz is the area that a speaker should have (regardless of sound quality) to be fully satisfying for many types of music. I'm not talking about film earthquakes. Another question: are there also changes “upwards” in the bass frequency band? Perhaps a different phase response because it is now a 12” woofer and obviously a different compression board is used? Or can we say that although there is a smaller hole at the throat of the horn, it is basically the same horn from there on? Or do the new ports also change something in what the horn itself does in the upper frequency range, e.g. from 80 Hz on? And a 12“ woofer, does it even produce slightly louder or cleaner sound energy in the transition area to the mid horn than a 15” woofer? Sorry for all the questions, but it's so exciting and of great interest.
Marvel
Great questions, Heinz... It just made me think the 12 inch woofer may have even snappier response than the 15. Awesome work, Roy!
