Bose Reveals New 901 60th Anniversary Edition Speakers

Bose Reimaged 901 Limited Edition Speakers - Only 12 Pairs!

As we recently reported, Bose Corporation stirred up quite a commotion in the high-end audio world when the company announced that it had acquired McIntosh Group, the parent company of both McIntosh and Sonos faber. Shortly after the announcement, Audioholics president Gene DellaSala posted a video discussing the iconic Bose 901 loudspeaker, which is easily one of the best-selling home audio products of all time, with a production period spanning multiple decades, beginning in 1968 and ending with the 901 Series VI speakers in 2016. Despite its enormous success, the 901 has always been somewhat controversial among audiophiles, owing to its unusual design. Each speaker uses nine identical full-range 4-inch drivers. Of these, only one fires toward the listener to deliver direct sound; the remaining eight drivers fire backward from the 901’s angled rear end. Bose’s goal for this design was to create a more immersive sound, similar to what one would hear in a concert hall, where reflections off the room’s walls and ceiling make up a significant part of what the audience hears.

They look quite nice, that is a pretty limited run though. I'm  surprised they aren't considering bringing back a redesigned powered version with built in DSP/equalizer. Lifestyle audio products are their forte (pardon the pun) . Something along those lines could become their flagship offering.

I would have done 60 pair, for the 60th anniversary.  I don't see the logic (or merit for the time involved) to simply do a dozen.

Guess there's a reason my first name isn't Amar.

According to the article they’re not even selling them, they’re giving them to friends and family.

Whoever wrote that press release misspelled Sonus Faber.

Gene hits a point I strongly agree with. The 901, when used with a sub and carefully set up, are great club speakers. The diffusion, lack of hot spots is big plus where one cannot stand in the  "sweet spot" all night. Nobody goes to a club for critical listening, but no one wants to be blasted with awful sound, either.

I've lived with Great Heils and Visaton bass units in my study speakers for almost 5 years, and I think that Great Heils could be used in a carefully designed club sound field. due to their diffusion and smooth response above 1 KHz.

When I first started my Audio journey I was torn between Bose 901's and Klipsch Heresy's... I would like to think I chose Wisely.

When my wife and I were married in 2010, i had a nice pair of LS. At least I liked... not sure what Dean would say, bu he had a chance to hear them... Anway, my wife's niece and family came over from Viginia Beach and were at the house. They had brought a karaoke machine with them. I got it plugged in a d he started a couple song and said, "Wow, these sound really nice." He went up and looked at the logo and just said, "Oh... that's why." At least he knew the brand. They had little  Bose cubes at home, which I got to hear a year or two later when we visited VB.

The 60th anniversary 901 non-reissue is a regurgitate of a decades old design repackaged using an uninteresting aesthetic created by a so-called "hip" design team for a vaguely identified, 40s-something buyer presumed to have no understanding of the value of money.  It's a formulaic that will be repeated by others

The re-issued 901 is an exceptional embodiment of the above. Decidedly dull and the answer to "what to do with a cache of 24 Quality Control rejects culled from an early 2000s (faded barcode sticker) production run of the PA version of 901s?" Affix thick top and bottom natural wood accents with gap-filling construction adhesive (because it wasn't designed for them), leverage Bose marketing machine, fabricate the vision of novelty.

Zero innovation in home audio has been realized.
