Heresy sealed enclosure vs ported

Recommended Posts

I bought some beater Heresys and turned them into super Heresys with ports, upgraded woofers and Dave As lmahl tweeters and they sounded almost identical to my modded Forte 1s.

Do a search for Super Heresy...

Some of the threads have be deleted or locked as it is not a Klipsch design (and this forum belongs to Klipsch).

I'm sure you could find something on a FB section or on AK.

Klipsch knew what they were doing with the Heresy. Sealed is the way to go with the current woofer. If you want to go ported, you would need a different woofer to experience any noticeable "improvement".  It was built to work as a system, tweeter, squawker, woofer, x-over, cabinet.

That has been my experience over the years.

Have fun with it! It is a hobby! Wont hurt but can be undone. If you are doing a rear port, I would suggest cutting a new back panel. Couldn't be easier and is quickly returned to stock. A port with the speaker positioned in the room correctly, may get you more bass. I doubt lower bass, just a couple spl from the woofer. Some feel the squawker is too bright, this may balance it out for you. Enjoy.

Plots don’t lie..  They extend much lower, have stronger mid bass, and sound much more balanced.  No more shouty, angry little box…

I assume you are talking about super with a different woofer, I assumed @MookieStl was referring to original woofers since OP hasn't mentioned new woofers.

Yes. I was referring to adding a port and not adjusting anything else. I have three pair of Heresy. One original, two Supers. One pair with a 4" rear port and one with a front 1x14 slot port (HIP look). Hard to speak to the the port on it's own as all have different components (slightly). Three different uses. Three great sets of speakers.

Even a small speaker can have significant bass problems in a small room. Sealed or ported box?  The two will sound different. Never met a mod that didn't get praise?🤠

Oh..

Ported with the k22 they sound horrible..  Boomy, flabby bass.

Even ported with the k28 they’re not great.  Roy’s network in the IV obviously addressed it

I believe the Super calls for a k-42 woofer- have you heard that config? I had a set of the HIP's with type B crossovers along with other mods and they sounded pretty good to me but still not enough bass for my liking.

They do.  Among other options.

Just answering the question about how they sounded with original drivers and ported before I swapped woofers.  Follow the ‘recipe’ and you’ll be happy

I was being nice. That is why I suggested to make a new back panel for the port experiment......can be undone quick and easy.

In my opinion, Klipsch are not shouty. The problem is that end-users are often mating modern analytical Chi-Fi tube amps and cheap receivers to them. Then there's bright solid-state amps as well. My Heresy II's stock lean on the warm side if anything. Today's gear is often too revealing and many don't mate the proper amps to the Heritage line.

We all hear things differently. The Heresy was designed to be a single speaker used as a center for the Khorn. The problem, IMHO, is that many flocked to buying them as a pair to be used as full-range speakers.

I do not want to get into what others might or might not use. It has been a consensus for, well, since the Heresy was used for full range use that they 'needed' something. I can't blame the many thousands who have tried, for decades.

Totally agree. I really liked my H2.

Again, totally agree. So many listeners try to AB the Heresy to X without adjusting for sensitivity and Hz and ...

Has anyone seen any videos before and after comparing this?

I don't have any video. I can share how stupid I looked after pushing ~ 200+ WPC RMS into two pairs of Supers H. I have no idea of the peak watts, but my hand was on the knobs and @MookieStl had to have been wondering who was going to buy the replacement drivers when I went too far.

I've actually already done the ports along with sound demos in the video. I was mostly interested in other's experiences.

That port and terminal cap looks perfect. Nice job
