stormin
Anyone help me out with choosing a good tube pre-amp for my chorus 2's? Looking for one at a moderate price that helps smooth out the mids and highs and yet excells in some bass slam. Thanks
sunnysal
how about this, less than a grand from frank van alstine...I am trying to convince him to put in switchable outputs so I can buy one...tony http://www.avahifi.com/images/sp4i.gif
William J
Depends on what your needs are, but I have an Audio Electronics Supply (think Cary) AE-3 that does what you're looking for, without losing the highs, plus it uses cheap tubes. The unit sells for $599.00, but only has volume and source select. They put the frills dollars into the design, and if you're a do-it-yourselfer, it's available as a kit. I'm running mine with Klipsch Epic CF-3s.
Guy Landau
A second hand Conrad-Johnson PV-AL is one of the nicest & cleanest sounding line stages around .Highly recommended .
joemcten
Stormin, both Guy and Mdeneen have valid points. If you do have your little heart set on tubes, you can not go wrong with a Conrad Johnson. They are warm and musical which is a natural match for horns. Older Audio Research pre's are also nice choices. Joe
joemcten
Stormin, Have you purchased a pre yet? If so, what, and how does it sound in your rig? Joe
Guy Landau
C-J preamps matched better in my system than ARC.I've tried ARC's LS-1(shares the same line stage as SP-9),sounded thin and dry.The SP-8 sounded big, airy but was unrefined,as opposed to C-J's PV10 which was cleaner and much more refind. swede
Go with an Audioresearch pre. The quality and the sound are one in the same. I bought my new. However, I have seen some on the various used web sites. ------------------
