mpgwagon
I have a desire to build a 1970's music only system. I'm a Technics fan so I'm want a 70's vintage Technics receiver (I'm thinking 50 WPC should be plenty) with Klipsch Heresy's. My question: Is Technics a good choice compared to vintage Sansui, Marantz or Kenwood? I love the looks of those 70's aluminum face receivers with the wood case(Guess it's my age). How do the receivers from the 70's compare with current models? Opinions please ------------------ Technics SA-1040DX Klipsch SF1 Fronts Klipsch KSW12 Sub. WMcD
In my opinion, there is nothing wrong with '70's equipment. I use a JVC receiver and a Sony receiver. Many posters here have a favorite brand of electronics. Just as folks have a favorite brand of car or beer. It is all good natured. People debate whether one amp sounds good, better, or best, versus another, or others. That has been going on since long before the 70s. Usually it is about current models; whenever current is. No consensus has been reached. Good luck on creating your system. Gil This message has been edited by William F. T2K
mpgwagon, the seventies are history.Get a new Marantz and a pair of Heresy II's with the SS check. Then get some seventies music. You'll feel young again. Keith (old fart)
Mr. Blorry
ebay has plenty of Dynaco ST-70s! Heresys sound great with the ol' tube amp IF it is properly restored and modded. Dynaco made the ST-70 through 1977! I can hear Kansas playing in the background as I type... Seventies RULE! ...sort of.
chickey
MPG, I have an old Technics SA-500 that still sounds great and serves as the basis for a second system in my den. You can pick them up fairly inexpensively on Ebay or by doing a search on Google. Can't say enough good things about the build quality and sound of this unit...and it sounds great when matched with a pair of Klipsch speakers! For more info on vintage Technicd equipment, check out this page: http://mark.kouts.home.mindspring.com/technics/1979.html Hope this helps, Colin
Guy Landau
to my tastes,70's Harman Kardon twin power recievers(i.e 430,630) sound better than other recievers that I tried like Sansui 9090DB,sony etc.
Clint Phare
I guess my Audio Research SP3A preamp would be considered vintage. My Dynaco gear has all been modified by VanAlstine so I guess that would'nt qualify. My thinking is a quality piece of gear from whatever era is still quality today, but as always technology has only improved products. I have always thought the old Dynaco gear was/ is terrific. As good today as any mid- fi stuff on the market, imho. I still drool everytime I see a Dynaco ST-400 on e- bay! How I would love to have one. edwardre
I have a ST-70 with a PAS 2 sitting out in the garage collecting dust and most likely, contact corrosion. Been thinking of pulling it out cleansing and setting it up either as a second room 'music only' setup or perhaps in the garage on the old 'audio workbench' to dink around with. I note with keen interest that there were several comments in this string regarding 'properly upgraded and modded' 'modified by VanAlstine'. Anybody out there know where I can get more info on these or other Dynaco mods/upgrades? ------------------ Ed Fronts: 1960's era Klipschorns (slightly modified) Center: 1984 Klipsch Belle Sub: Klipsch KSW200 Surrounds: Tannoy PSM6.5's Receiver: Denon AVR1701 Video: InFocus LP350 DLP front projector Satellite: DishNetwork 4722 (DD5.1) DVD: Panasonic A320 S-VHS: Panasonic PV-S7670 LaserDisc: Pioneer CDL-406 CD: Kenwood CD-404 5-Disc Changer EQ (for CD player only): Furman E151X2 Protection: Furman AV1215 Power Condition/Voltage Reg

Clint Phare
I can't recommend VanAlstine gear and upgrades enough! Bang for the buck you can get into truely Hi- Fi gear that will rival gear far more expensive. Really, everyone should check them out! Clint Phare
boomer9911- Hey I have a 2235B. I brought it up to work and using it there. I have some Boston Acoustic theatre surrounds ( 8" woofer and tweeter ) hooked up to it. It's an OK setup but not hi- end by any means. Good enough for the work place though.
