Sadest song ever heard on your horns?

Recommended Posts

There are two songs that stand out:

From the CD The Cure, Bloodflowers - the song "39". This has got to be the sadest song of all time, ever recorded. Bloodflowers, the latest album by the Cure recorded in 2000, also believed to be the best recording ever by the Cure. Robert Smith in "39", sings with desperation and sorrow unheard since their Pornography album recorded many years earlier. The entire album is an amazing piece of work. Watch out, this album can mess with your emotions like no other that I have ever heard, or heard of. Smith, the king of melancholy

From Lynn Andersons album, All The Kings Horses - the song "Long Long Time". To hear Lynn sing this standard is to love Lynn. She has a way of convincing you of every word said in the song. A love gone wrong, sung with the kind of conviction rarely heard. Passion, hurt, emotion, a very good performance indeed.

What are some of the sadest songs that you have played on your system.

I think Johhny Cash wrote some of the saddest songs of all time, and the one song I keep playing through my ProMedias (I need to buy the CD) is on "The Man Comes Around", his final 2002 album; the song "Hurt" by Trent Reznor, founder of Nine Inch Nails.

I really love this version, and Eva in general. But, oddly, I find it uplifting, not sad at all. It's a fantastic version of this classic, and her very subtle rephrasing I think is out of this world.

Hey, I love it too! It's my favorite recording of it.

For me, the saddest song I have heard on my Klipsches is "Trashman's Shoes" by the Austin band Shoulders.

I have to agree the first time I heard Johnny Cash sing "Hurt" on my La Scalas I was about to cry.

I agree that Robert Smith writes to the listener on a very deeply emotional personal level.

Black Eyed Dog, Nick Drake. Specifically the version on Time of No Reply. Seems that much more raw.

The most miserable song I know of, and absolutely beautiful in its purity. You hear the song, you hear how Nick sings it, how he hits the guitar, and all you are left with in your room is despair, somehow beautiful despair, probably because it seems so pure. The musical equivalent of someone coming to you having a complete breakdown, where every word, every tone of their voice, and every little action seems to truly be coming from the deepest part of themselves.

If Goodbye Cruel World from The Wall is the sort of cinematic, broadway version of despair, Black Eyed Dog would be finding yourself at your absolute lowest point, lower than you even knew you could go, half giving up hope, and half crying out for help.

Probably the most powerful two minutes of recorded music I know of.

I will second the mentions of Cash doing hurt. He was meant to do that song -- it simply carries emotion in the same manner as Black Eyed Dog.

"Ol' Man River" from the musical Show Boat(1936)...sung by Paul Robeson with anger and despair.

"When a Blind Man Cries" by Deep Purple. Released as a single on March 21st 1972 on the Purple Records label. Also available on a compilation titled "Deep Purple Single's a's and b's". This song is the inspiration for my username.
