big_gto
For the past week my woofers rattle when I boost the bass. I use them for HT and radio. They are JBL L56 10" two-ways, and the A/V Receiver is a Technics SA-940DX five channel with 100 watts per channel. The tweeters work just fine. The living room is 10'x21' so there's no need to really turn them up. The speakers haven't been driven hard in years since I bought a pair of Klipsch. Maybe burnt crossovers? The speakers are 1983 models.
prodj101
that could be a sign of something as minor as a loose wire vibrating against the driver or enclosure, or something as serious as a bad voice coil, you should be able to tell by taking them apart. big_gto
Swapped out the JBL's with the Klipsch. Sure enough, they're blown. For twenty years these JBL's have been powered by a Carver m400-t power amp without fail. Now in the last three years they've been powered by the Technics reciever. I know I haven't driven them hard, but I wonder if the LF content from DVD movies may forced the H class reciever to clip a lot over time; enough to slowly blow the woofers? Over excursion? Time to shop for more drivers.
