Cuffclean
Current set-up is: Amp - Joilda 502B; CDP - Ah Tjoeb '99; Speakers - Cornwall II's. Considering upgrading from intergrated tube to SET tubes (2a3 or 45's). Seek recommendations on excellant Amp/Pre-Amp for Cornwalls. Experts, please advise. Thank You. Randy Bey
Check out Welborne Labs stuff. Their Moondog 2A3 is supposed to be great. I have their 300B Laurels. I cannot conceive of a reason to ever replace them.
Colin
One of the nicest things about the big old boxes is that they are so efficient that you can drive them with delicate sounding tubes like the 2A3s. One of the worse things about the big old boxes is that they are so efficient that your ears eventually pick up the subtle mistakes of a average front end. There are many high powered SETs: I know of Wavac's 572 amp @ 50W & 833 @ 100W. Also a homemade 50W 2A3 amp at ; http://www.pe.net/~ilj/my00006.htm One of the best "high" power amp may be the Welborne Labs Apollo SET, which develops 18W of pure Class A power, using the KR Enterprise 842HVD output tube. The Apollo I is $2690/pr for the kit, $3720/pr assembled. The Apollo II (with upgrade parts) is $3950/pr kit, $5200/pr assembled. Search the net for Wright, Wellbourne and Doc Bottlehead. Last year, I popped for a new custom pair of the Paramour 3.5-watt mono blocks (2A3 tube) kits assembled in light tan Elder at Electronic Tonalities. Read about my first impression at http://www.bottlehead.com/et/adobespc/Paramour/paramour.htm by scrolling half way down. I wrote a review at the Secrets site: http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/volume_8_2/paramour-tube-amplifier-4-2001.html. ------------------ Cornwalls, 2A3 Paramours, Dynaco PASIII, Rotel 955, KSW200, LF10
Spider124
Welborne doesn't sell assembled amps anymore. They are kits-only now. If you contact Bottlehead, they know a guy who will assemble thier kits (But really they are very easy if you so much as know which end of a soldering iron to hold) and does a great job, but it is somewhat expensive. Charlie ------------------ "What's that noise?" "It's the carpet, it kinda mutes the speakers." "No, it sounded more like the chandalier falling."
