Might I ask why you decided to reply to a thread that was started almost 16 years ago?

To be absolutely honest fella I didn't realise the post was this old I was just surfing the net stumbled upon your discussion and it looked interesting and I wished to contribute as Bang and Olufsen owner and enthusiast. I hope no one minded.

I thought B&O was out of business, until I saw a B&O showroom while walking thru SoHo in Manhattan in 2018. The most memorable device there was a round bluetooth speaker the size of a snare drum, mounted at a 45 degree angle on a tripod, for $2700. I was not impressed by the sound. It filled a space with mood music, but that's about all it did.

That's the A9, try cranking it up and listen to Dark side of the moon by pink Floyd, it's an excellent speaker for what it needs to be, it's not a traditional hi fi of course, I use 800 mk2, a beocenter 2,boeogram 3300 turntable and a beolab 19 to get my rocks off the old fashioned way which of course beats any Stan alone speaker

It's just funny because it's always people who are new to the forum who reply to ancient threads like this.  🙂

Why doesn't B&O evoke as much animosity and ridicule as Bose? They also seem to place emphasis on image over performance. I admit that I'm not real familiar with all of their gear - I've only heard a few of their systems and I've only owned one of their products (an older TT). While I really like the cool looks and operation of B&O equipment, the performance is not worth the price in my experience. Their styling and operation is way beyond anything Bose could put out but basically they seem to be alot like Bose in selling hype over performance. Don't they also claim to be "high end"? They really do deliver a cool factor stylewise and it's fun equipment to play with but again the performance is disappointing. So why isn't B&O scorned as much as Bose? Is there more to B&O than I know about?

They have their following albeit not like back when.

A negative on the turntables was the inability to find a replacement needle except through them, being proprietary.

B&O may be overpriced, but they don't lie about their performance.  That's why Bo$e gets way more abuse.  Bottom line.  If Amar didn't lie about his shitty products, he wouldn't get hammered the way he does by anyone who knows anything about audio.

I think it is good to revitalize some of old threads just to update them.

This could be one of such threads.

B&O may be considered stylish first and sound the second. But only to those who have not heard it in person. The prices are high, that is true. But the craftsmanship and made in home land is a part of the price, which can not be claimed for many other companies.

I have had the chance to hear the complete B&O system beginning 1990s, and then a few years ago for the second time when auditioning Beolab 50 speakers in a B&O system visiting audio show. Beolab 50s filled a big room with clean sound, one of the best systems that I heard in that show.

Sound Smith restores and makes modern versions of B&O cartridges, a good opportunity for fans of the brand.

Wow, surprised to see this thread dredged up from the murky depths of the forum labyrinth.  I really regret the the thread title and hate to admit to agreeing with dragonfyr - I just had a good chuckle as I actually just gave that guy a like.

B&O is flat out cool but I was always intimidated in the retail stores.  They seemed so snobbish but I was totally wrong about that impression.  After I was able to pick up a B&O turntable real cheap ( I think it was on of their lower end models - RXII maybe?), I was trying to locate a replacement cartridge for it while my mother was visiting from Denver.  I was having no luck finding a cartridge here in Montana but when my mom got back to Denver she went on a secret mission.  I had no idea why she was asking me later what kind of “record player” I was having trouble with until I got a call from the B&O store manager in Denver.  Mom, not knowing a thing about hifi, found the posh store and went in trying to find a “new needle” for my “record player” and the manager was great.  He called me long distance (a big deal in those days) to get the details while she was in the store and they were treating her like a queen. They gave her a good deal on one of the better cartridges and I got it in the mail a few days later.  I miss my mom and cherish that turntable.

Gotta admit I miss him.  Unless it changed, last time I spoke with him he was moving (literally) to  China to teach English.  No idea if that panned out or not.
