Daddy Dee
One of the bits of Gilligan's Island lore is that Ginger (such a lovely and sophisticated Marilyn Monroe type) always was a little irritated at Mary Ann's popularity as girl next door type. jdm56
I always thought Ginger looked a little malnourished. Of course, she was stranded on that island all those years.[] Now Mary Ann, there's a gal you could cuddle up with!
WMcD
Now wait a minute. Is it not true that the opening song was changed. The first version ended with " . . . the movie star and the rest". Then this was changed to " . . . the Professor and Mary Ann." So Mary Ann had a following and the change was because of it. We should also poll Wilma versus Betty. In my view, the level headed brunette always is more appealing. Smile, Gil
Daddy Dee
Well, In the Flintstones movie, Wilma and Betty both were very nice. However, IMO, Betty was the real babe.
charlieboy
Both were hot but Mary Ann was more believable to obtain. Probably not as selfish and more willing to please.[:$] More of a giver. What I'm I saying? I'll shut up![:#]
WMcD
How about Buffy versus Willow. The level headed Willow wins. It looks to me that she was so much of a threat that the script writers had to recast her as a . . . um . . . homosexual and therefore not a threat to Buffy and love interests. Daddy Dee
Gil, That's interesting. How about the cast of CSI (Las Vegas, the original) Catherine Willows or Sara Sidle. Most interesting contrasts between these two characters. Willows is the stone cold fox, but Sara is the (albeit more complex) girl next door who has this palpable spark for Grissom.. Grissom is the lonely geek, with too much character and leadership to act out on his impulses.

Rob I think Amy will approve. This is much more 'good ol boys' and Americana than the photo debates of last night. Thanks for playing everybody! And we LOVE brainy blondes too, don't we gentlemen? dragonfyr
Can't disgree too much on the results so far, but I must admit that during the same period Elizabeth Montgomery on Bewitched and esp. Carolyn Jones as Morticia!! on the Addams Family had/have my votes!

Sara is alright, it's hard to get past that gap tooth, plus she's too much of a tomboy. So neither one now.
sputnik
A well reasoned discussion of the topic here. http://www.retrocrush.com/babes/dawn/gingervmaryann.html Bottom line: Ginger = Teaser & Mary Ann = Pleaser
oscarsear
As I understand it Ginger wasn't all a happy camper to be part of that program. She was somewhat duped into the role being told that the series was to be focused on that character. As a serious actress she felt the content below par, which I guess would be true. Met Gilligan when he was still Maynard G. Krebs and saw Mrs. Howell from a distance in W.L.A..
