Klipsch KG Line...Which ones are the best?

Just thought I'd throw out a question I haven't seen discussed here. I know that the KG line from Klipsch doesn't get a lot of respect around here and I know that they really don't compare to the Heritage, Legend, or Reference series, but they are still pretty good speakers in their own right.

I have personally owned the KG2.2's and very recently came into a pair of 4.2's. (The 4.2's are currently hooked up as surrounds's in my main HT setup.)

The 2.2's are no slouches for bookshelfs. I have owned several pair, and I really like their smooth response. The lack of a true "Horn" makes them less "forward" than most Klipsch speaks.

The 4.2's are performing admirably as surrounds, and I haven't used them in any other capacity yet, so I can't really give a educated review of them yet.

Here is the question for those of you who have owned KG's. Which ones are best? The older first generation, or the second generation KG's? Which ones have you owned, which ones do you like the best?

I bought my KG2.2's and one KG2.2V in 1993

still have them and they still work great

like others have said, pretty good for a bookshelf sized speaker

never audition other KG's at the time since I was buying these for surrounds and a center

now they are the mains and center for a small HT setup in the living room.

sad to say, I have some Polk speakers for the surrounds for this setup

most speakers (non-Klipsch) cannot hold up after 12 years but these keep going on and on and on . . .

glad Klispch never used foam that rots out on their woofers

so to say which KG is the best, i guess its the one that you use the most and enjoy

so i vote for the little KG2.2's

I've never listened to the original ones but I own or have owned the following

KG 1.5's

3.5's

4.2's

5.2's

Of all of them my 3.5's are my favorite. Why? First because

they were my first foray into Klipsch. Second, pound for pound

and even at original price point you can't get better overall sound. In

a normal size or smaller listening area. They are just what everyones

needs,, detailed, robust bass, great soundstage and only slight bright

highs. The 4.2's and 5.2's are bigger (my 5.2's even have a

set of DeanG's crossover) so you get more ovolume and presence but in

the small detail sI still think the 3.5's are at the head of the class.

I don't think people here really dismiss this series it's just that

they are often higher up the speaker food-chain, may have never owned

them, or enjoy the braggin rights of Heritage.

Now out of production they are probably the best way to get into really good Klipsch sound at a reasonable price.

I love'em.

I use KG-5.2's as mains and KG1 plus as my surrounds, and a KV3 as my center. Haven't really heard any of the other Kg line. So my vote would be for the KG5.2.

You have the Heritage guys and the Reference Guys, I guess we can be the Discontinued guys[:(]

Steve

The Discontinued Guys ! LOL ! Now thats funny ! Hey, from what I've been reading on the forum it seems that my Belles are now gone from the Heritage lineup . Can I join your club ? [Y]

After a visit to Thebe's place, I bought a pair of KG4s for my son as a graduation gift. Mated with my old Kenwood KR-9600 (160wpc), they sound amazing. For under $200, the KGs may be the best bang-for-the-buck Klipsch speaker out there, especially for someone just getting started or on a tight budget. I definitely prefer my Heritage but they take up much more room and would cost quite a bit more to replace. Also, with so many options, an all-KG HT would be easy to build at a very reasonable price.

For what it's worth, I thought Marty's 3.5s were wonderful sounding speakers and probably would get my vote also. Amazing sound for such beany little things. They may not be the best sounding KGs (although I'm sure they're close) but they're definitely the best sounding for the size and price.

I've owned all of the following in chronological order:

KG 2.2 in oil oak - first speaker purchase. I really loved these things in my college dorm. Traded up to..

KG 3.2 in oil oak - these really pounded and were an amazing speaker. I sold them to get my next KG 5.5s

KG1 in oil oak - I use them as surrounds and since they don't have rear ports, I can put them up against the walls.

KG 5.5 medium oak - surprisingly not as much of an upgrade as I thought

it would be from the 3.2s. Still using them for my mains and are

very nice speakers. I use a sub, but you really don't have to

with the 5.5s Even the 3.2s had amazing bass. I liked the

passive radiator style of the 3.2.

I also have tried a KV2, KG 2.2v and KLF-C7 for center channel

use. Currently using the 2.2, but the 5.5s easily overpower

it. Still looking for a 5.5 to convert to center channel

use. I had to dump the C7 to clear up funds for my projector.

Purchased another pair of 2.2s on ebay recently to try in place of the

5.5s. Although I remember loving my 2.2s I had long ago, a quick

A/B test against the 5.5 really showed the shortcommings of the small

speaker, even with a monster sub in place. I figured the 2.2s may

be better with my current center, but it made me realize that instead,

I HAVE TO GET a 5.5 center channel. With a little bit of EQ, the

2.2s can sound as good as the 5.5s at moderate volume using a seperate

sub. The 2.2s are currently for sale. Too small for my

large HT room.

The finishes on these speakers are fantastic! I really like the

Oiled Oak the best. You sure can build a sweet HT on a collection

of cheap KGs found on Ebay and around this site that will rival most

any HTs around costing thousands of dollars.

forgot to answer the question - which are best?

Easy answer: Any one that you can find locally for a good price

and in CLEAN, untorchered condition. They all are good and can be

used somewhere in your house. If you can find an exceptional

matched pair on ebay that are well taken care of for a good price, the

shipping may be worth the $$$, but make sure they are packed well and

insured!

Nice thing about these speakers are that if you find clean examples and

don't pay too much for them, you can easily upgrade to bigger ones when

you are ready and get most of your money back selling them to somebody

else who will also love them.
