wuzzzer
On receivers that have a 'sub out' preamp output and also a regular pre-out and main in hookup, which would be best to use to hook a sub up to? If I use the sub out preamp, does the receiver still amplify the entire audio range? Or would I better off hooking the sub up to the main pre-out and then back to the main in? Questions would apply to older pro-logic models, not newer ones with LFE outputs. Thanks!
wuzzzer
Alright, was this a really dumb question? Sorry if it was!
DrWho
Well it depends on how you want to crossover to the subwoofer... Using the LFE out on the reciever, the reciever will be taking care of the crossover and doing all the bass management functions (which I would recommend). This would also imply that you bypass the crossover on the sub (or set it as high as possible to avoid any overlap). Using the main pre-outs would allow you to use the crossover on the subwoofer - setting the sub to just fill in where the mains roll off. But this also means you will need to set your reciever to think it has no crossover - which will also send a full range signal to the mains. However, there is no need to connect a cable back into the main input (unless your sub also implements a high pass on its outputs that you want to take advantage of. If wiring your sub into the reciever cuts out the mains and the sub doesn't have a high pass on its outputs, or you don't want to use it, then get a pair of Y-Adapters and split the output into the subwoofer and the main in). I think the method posing less possible problems would be to hook up to the subwoofer output (which is why they have those features built into the reciever). Sorry for responding slow - it's not a dumb question, just a really akward one that can easily open a huge can of worms and personal opinions. More info regarding your setup, room and equipment would be helpful unless you've got it figured out already.
