$12,000 for a little fan?!?

Flat down to 1Hz is nice, but it doesn't get up beyond 19Hz.....and how loud does it go?

A good infinte baffle system should be able to dig down to 10Hz @ 130dB

for under $4000 (including amp and processing). I like low bass, but

seriously....what kind of information is being stored at 5Hz? That's

seriously slow enough that you would hear it as just a slow change in

amplitude in all the other frequencies.

Wouldn't 130 dB @ 10 Hz likely do serious structural damage and give you the urge to void your bowels?

The IB I have in mind ought to do 103 @ 10 Hz and 112 @ 20 Hz and come

in at just under $700. Naturally this is in model-space and

doesn't account for room gain or peaks/nulls, but still -- the CBR

looks pretty decent there.

so what drivers and amp are you looking at? You should totally make a thread so that we can all drool over it.

Btw, the "brown note" was debunked on myth busters, but I'm sure

structural damage would be a concern. The point isn't to turn them up

that loud...just to have moderate headroom for the occasional explosion

Yes, essentially IB fan, however I'm not sure what scientific/physical properties set these fans so much apart from other similarly powered metal fans with much larger blades. I've heard how large industrial fans sound in large room, however it seems like it would take a wind tunnel of a fan to shake walls...and the resulting breeze would knock over your Khorns.

Strange.

But may have to get one in the future. :)

Well, I'm not sure how drool-worthy it will be. I've already

bought the amp -- an H/K PA-2100 making a whopping 65 W/ch. It's

running my Chorus IIs now with my AVR-235 behaving as a prepro.

Sounds pretty nice. Drivers will either befour each of the AE IB15 drivers or

the Dayton IBs. 32.5 watts will bottom (or nearly) each of those

drivers at about 8 Hz IIRC, so it ought to do just fine. Add $100

for a BFD and another $100 for a meter and some wood, and voila, the

lowest cost for getting 112 dB @ 20 Hz I've been able to find.

Unfortunately it will be a while before I get to find out if it will work as predicted, but a guy can dream in the meantime.

Oh, I know about the Mythbusters episode. Just the same, I've

read of people experiencing nausea and disorientation in the

presence of infrasonics. There was a thread on the IB forum where

a guy tested a 7 Hz note and everyone in the room felt sick and his

girlfriend actually threw up . . . another guy said he stuck his head

in the manifold while it was playing a 5 Hz tone and he didn't feel

right for the rest of the day. So yeah, I was being a little

facetious, but there's a grain of truth in there, at least if those

people are believable. :-)

MODERATE headroom? Pish tosh. ;-)

Did you know that if you restricted the cabin volume behind those

drivers to 10 cubic feet per driver that you can pump 100 watts into

them and not sacrifice much low frequency extension while massively

controlling the excursion of the drivers? But then you'll need a better

amp or at the very least bridge the one you plan to use (you only need

1 channel of amplification anyway).

So with 4 drivers you would merely need to build a big 40 cubic foot

box...nothing fancy but just enough to keep the pressure in. The cool

part is this will help with noise rejectrion throughout the rest of the

house and the neighbors (depending on where the IB's will be located).

And you definetly thought it through [:D]

I still wanna see pictures when you get her up and running...if you get her done soon you will probably be the first on the board with an IB!

Btw, sorry for the thread hijack.

1'st?????? Here's mine, but I doubt I'm the first.

Sorry about the low res pics, they're from a disposable camera that was then scanned. I feel a nice digital camera coming on for my birthday. The drivers are the Avalanche 18's driven by a Behringer EP-2500. Carl

I don't see how on earth someone would think mounting those massive motors to a couple of 2x4 framing members would be a good idea. Bet he's patching drywall cracks right now.

EDIT - never mind, I see in the last couple of shots that the framing was beefed up. Maybe this would work okay.

END EDIT

Ok fine, second...I've never seen your pics before...very nice.

Have you had a chance to get some measurements on your system? If I

were to go with an IB I would be definetly looking at the avalanche as

well. They're a bit more costly than the AV or Dayton IB15's but

definetly worth every extra penny. WinISD tells me you can push 130dB down to 10Hz with 2000watts of power [H]
