DizRotus
The pair of La Scalas ( see Four abused Lascalas need a good home - sold ) and the H/K 730 (see Re: eBay H/K 730 truly "Near Mint") that I got for the high school band (see Band Room System advice? ) are ready to rock. The band director is under thirty and the high school kids are . . . high school kids. What music would you select to showcase La Scalas to that crowd? Bob Crites suggested Classical Gas by Mannheim Steamroller and Maria Maria by Santana. The band had a Paul Simon theme to the half-time show this season, so I'll take a Paul Simon CD. I'll also have Take Five by Brubeck (there's a jazz band too). I was also thinking of the Beatles' Back in the U.S.S.R.; that jet plane landing intro at high volume would get their attention. But, do they know who the Beatles were, and do they know what the U.S.S.R was? Is there some current"music" that the kids would know and like that 's well recorded with varied instrumentation and tight percussion? WWPWKD? DrWho
Well you can never go wrong with the Beatles - something like Come Together or Revolution. The Beatles are certainly still very popular in my generation...probably not something everyone listens to every day, but everyone certainly recognizes the music. But you're going to need to pick something "mainstream" to get the attention of the kids. Sadly, most everything I can think of will sound really awful on the lascalas (rap just ain't gonna sound good with those bass bins). Colter played a song for me the other day in the car that was this jazz hip hop thing that his younger helpers listen to all the time - something like that would go over real well and still cater to the tastes of old people (with the jazz). You migth also consider some slections from Queen...like Bohemian Rhapsody or Another One Bites the Dust. Anything from Blue Man Group would be a great choice too. I think playing Thriller by Michael Jackson would be a hilarious and great song to demo with.
Coytee
Perhaps "Loving you" by Minnie Ripperton? That final "ewwwwwwwwwww" that's about 15 octives high would... well, I don't know what it would do... but what ever it WOULD do, it wouldn't be pretty. I'd contemplate the Queen idea, Blue man, Bad Company, The Who perhaps I'm dating myself
rplace
With out a doubt: Anarchy in the U.K. by the Sex Pistols. It is a school, right? These kids needs some ed-ju-ma-cation on music. Throw in anything by the Clash as well. I suggest "Safe European Home" form the Give em Enough Rope LP. BTW the Brubeck should be the type to span all generations. thebes
Believe it or not but classic rock is a making a big comeback among many teenagers so I would suggest "Dark Side of the Moon" or perhaps something from the Doors. Here's a cool article about it: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/11/13/AR2005111301291.html?nav=most_emailed

sputnik
All good suggestions but don't forget the good ol' cannon shots on the Telarc 1812 (not especially current). Also, "Hotel California" from "Hell Freezes Over" seems to be a forum favorite.
ranjith
I second the classic rock option, can't go very wrong with Floyd or Zeppelin... having been outta high school only 2 yrs ago I can assure you classic rock is very popular. let us know how the even goes! good luck, Ranjith
DizRotus
Your suggestions are just the kind of input I'm seeking. The Floyd, Zeppelin, Dave Matthews & Tchaikovsky 1812 suggestions were already on my short list, but I had no clue what young people would recognize and appreciate. I'll post the final selections and the results. Michael- I've posted in your H/K 730 tuner thread.
