boomer9911
OK, finally saw this remake for the first time....SAD, VERY SAD...... Is this film a joke on the original classic by chance.....for the first part I thought I was watching "another" Spielberg Holacaust flick with the people as usual "marching down the long road"..... give it a break Steven....IT'S OVER!! WOW...the only part I could accept, and it was hard, was the ole snake eye in the basement scene...other than that, what a waste of time....a true classic is ruined IMHO anyway.....thanks Spielberg.....even Cruise and Robbins roles sucked IMO..... did anyone actually see a "FLYING MACHINE" by chance, or just the Empire State building CREATURES walking around like I did.....just curious..... PS....would love to have seen what Lucas could have done....oh yes......[]
m00n
Huh... I never seen the first, but I did see this one, I thought it was really good.

boomer9911
Actually was a Radio broadcast( have a original copy) of a si-fi show that went wrong....very wrong.....and people took it seriously in the 50\60's on air that thought was actually happening....a true story...... Later in the 70's a movie was released....a cult classic.....WAR OF THE WORLDS...... sorry if I'm critical, just my opinion on the flick.....SUCKED........ toddvj
Well, for what it's worth, most people would say the 70's "cult classic" version sucked as well.
boomer9911
then why remake it....must have "some" merit to some ........[] sshhhhhhhhh.....don't tell Batman eh........[]
sunburnwilly
The new War of the Worlds has got incredible surround and lfe effects . Worth owning as a demo . The original movie was released in the 50's ...
damonrpayne
Wasn't the original popular version done in 1953? I've not seen the 70s version. While the predictably lame spielburg ending sucked I enjoyed the rest of the film. It is more true to the books than the '53 version too. Dakota Fanning is the only blight on the movie IMO. sunburnwilly
I don't recall the 70's version , but there was a short lived TV series in the late 80's ...
wuzzzer
Wow, I don't think I ever heard my sub hit that loud and that low. Definitely a great movie to show off your system!
dblue
boomer, The original film was inspired by the radio broadcast, but in most part based on the H.G Wells novel that was written in 1898. (not to be confused with Orson Wells, who read the famous radio broadcast in 1938). All three adaptations (both movies and the broadcast) were interpretations of the book, not of each other. To get an idea on which was more accurate, here's the original novel in it's entirety: http://www.fourmilab.ch/etexts/www/warworlds/warw.html BTW, I haven't seen the new Spielberg movie, but the 1958 version, in my opinion, is horrible, and hardly a classic. But to each his own!
Petrol
Wow, I don't think I ever heard my sub hit that loud and that low. Definitely a great movie to show off your system! I agree... my dang wife, who continues to use the sub as a end table quickly found herself cleaning her wine up off the carpet []
BobbyT
Good flick, awesome demo DVD. There were some intense moments. My wife, who has never seen the first movie, came unglued during a couple of scenes. And I own both versions.
Frzninvt
Definately no award winner, but I thought it had decent entertainment value. It worked my system over pretty damn good for sure! Pretty much a Special Effects extravaganza, doesn't top Episode III by any means though. It certainly did not follow the 50's story line much at all except for the scene mentioned already. oscarsear
This version followed the book closer than any other film done. The alien craft were "walkers" in the book and the terra-forming was in the book as well. I'm not a big T. Cruise fan but he did alright in this sci fi arena. Gene Barry who starred in the 50's version does a cameo in this one as the ex-father-n-law. The end of the book was anti-climactic and so are all the film versions. On the edge of the end of the world when the aliens literally lie down an die. But, historically the end is as logical as any, just not action packed. That's what I think bugs people about this version of this movie. It's so damn intense then just sputters to a close. As they say....."alls Well(s) that ends Well(s)"....sorry couldn't help myself....
SteelerFan
It was pretty good I thought, there were a couple of things that didn't make sense to me but I'll not go into that so as not to ruin it for others who haven't seen it yet. Willbean
There's a bunch of plot holes in that movie you can drive a truck through, but I tried not to think about it and just took it strictly from the point of view of the survivors. I think it's a truly scary film in that sense. Especially the scene where the Tom Cruise and his family get overtaken in their car by that panic stricken mob, very scary stuff. Just overlook the fact that I think giant war machines buried deep underground, million of years ago would have been brought to the surface somewhere by erosion and the shifting of the earth.
