Memoirs of a Geisha

Very good movie-- so many wonderful actors and sets. Its eye candy. The actress who plays Sayuri/Chiyo is an incredibly natural beauty--I remember her from Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon--

The art and style of the authentic geisha girl is preserved here -- I thought that was interesting how Sayuri makes the comment that during the war "any girl with silk and make-up" had become a geisha--to appeal to the US soldiers. To see the original geishas training and tribulations was enlightening--can you imagine a tradition where you sell your virginity?

After seeing other period Asian movies, this one has much of the grit often seen in them removed--probably to appeal to a broader audience. It was tough but movies like "Farewell My Concubine" and "Ran" show much more brutality. After seeing those I felt the geishas had it pretty good!

Don't miss this -- beautiful, touching, historic

Happens all over the world? Where did you learn your history?

Its just not a concept that resonates with us here in America. For example, I had a hard time giving mine away...
