FM Radio over the Net

EDIT: 02-17 @ 12:37pm EST
While the original purpose of this thread was to share links to streaming music on the web, it has taken a more technical tack on page 2.

EDIT: 02-16 @ 10:49AM EST

The edited subject is more to the point than the previous title.

Since I often find myself working at the computer day and night, I more frequently listen to jazz over my Comcast broadband connection. Its surprising how good the cheap Altec AVS300 computer speakers (including tiny powered sub) sound. Sitting so close to the speakers, its kind of like wearing headphones. Someday Ill connect the PC to the pre-amp to see what it sounds like through real speakers.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Ive attached links to the stations I listen to most often. Id be interested in any other links that you know of to good music, it need not be jazz.

To make it easy, I'll post an updated compilation of the links suggested to date. Please keep 'em coming.

Thanks a bunch Neil, I'll check those out. I keep my iMac wired through HK730 into Dahlquist speakers for my little home office (sorry didn't have any Klipsch that worked out).

I'll make good use of those links. I, too, enjoy jazz or classical in the wee hours.

Hello Michael!

As I type I'm listening to Jazz88 from Minneapolis. The DJs are high school kids, and it shows, but the music is cool.

The CBC link to CBC Radio 2 will get you Andy Shepard (Sp?) and After Hours, a good source of relaxing jazz for the wee hours.

Be sure to check out Ed Love's Destination Jazz on WDET from 7PM to Midnight M - F.

If you run across any good links, please share them.

BTW, if you have any old autoformers, I'm looking for a pair to make DIY ALKs for the schools' La Scalas. I'm also planning to do the bass reflex mod on the La Scalas this summer.

Enjoy the links.

www.kcsm.org

24hr/day, commercial free REAL jazz (read no Kenny G, no "smooth jazz" EVER).

I get it over the air, but it's available over the net. Saturdays from 10 am - 2 pm (pst) DJ Sonny Buxton's show is like a grad school seminar on jazz. Followed by DJ/pianist Dick Conte from 2 pm - 6 pm. Clifford Brown Jr. hosts the 10 - 2 shift on Thursdays. Bob Parlocha, the overnight DJ is also exceptional. Most of the DJ's are alumni of the late, great KJAZ in San Francisco.

On pretty much sun up to sun down at my house!

These are great. I especially like KNTU and KCSM.

This is sort of a secret pleasure.

On time in the early '80s I went into the office (here in Chicago) on a snowy December Saturday afternoon. Tuning around, there was old time radio. They were playing Christmas shows from the '30s and '40s. Some of them were produced from just across the Chicago River at the Wrigley Building.

It was a wonderful and unexpected time trip.

I still lsiten. Now, Chuck Shaden's "Those Were the Days" is on WDCB, which can be found on the web at www.wdcb.org. on Saturdays from 1 to 5 pm Central time.

This is not everyone's cup of tea. "Suspense" is always good, though. February is Jack Benny month.

BTW, a buddy chided me for watching old movies on TCM. "How can you watch this stuff?" (Well, that one was a bit lame.) Then later in the day the tube got tuned to embarassingly mindless contemporary sitcoms. So I said, "Don't you ever comment on old movies."

It seems that FM channels are all focused on four or five types of music. Thank goodness for the exception of the "flavors" of NPR. But there is room in the Internet for diversity.

I've been a fan of satellite radio for several years but have recently discovered internet radio. Internet radio is REALLY cool. And there are several media players on the market that allow you to stream internet radio into your audio system. D-Link and LinkSys make them and so do Roku. I'm using the Roku M2000 and love it. Jazz fans might want to check out this Santa Monica, CA station: http://www.jazzandblues.org/listen/links/kkjz1.pls and classical fans should check out Otto's Baroque at http://1.fm/wm/energybaroque128k.asx and Klassik Radio out of Hamburg, Germany at http://212.211.137.136/3165klassikradio_live.mp3?=.wmv

Mick,

I meant to include the link to jazzandblues.org, thanks for correcting the oversight.

Now, I must confess ignorance regarding the rest of your post. What are the features/advantages of using D-Link, Roku or something similar? Considering that the streams are essentially MP3 quality digital audio, I was just planning to run the audio out from my PC to the "Spare" input of my pre-amp.

As previously stated, I listen on line on my computer, rather than through the 2-channel system. If and when I feel the need to listen to streamed music through the 2-channel system, why can't I just patch the PC audio (Realplayer, Windows Media Player, etc.) straight into the pre-amp?

Neil:

You can run directly from your computer to your pre-amp. The D-Link, LinkSys and Roku products allow you to play internet radio of many formats (Windows Media, mp3, RealAudio, etc.) but more importantly, they allow you to brouse your radio playlists or music on your computer remotely. They also give you the choice of digital, analog and optical output to your stereo and good DAC.

I've run directly from my computer to my pre-amp just to give it a try and wasn't impressed with the quality. With Roku Network Music Player the internet sound is terrific! And I hardly use my CD player anymore. All my CDs are ripped to Windows Media Player in WMA lossless format. This affords tremendous flexibility in playback (via artist, album, playlist, etc.). I just find it easier to brouse through my music library via the Roku than to rummage through a stack of CDs.
