Chicago_Pete
Just curious I guess? Does anyone have a set time for their their tube systems to warm up before a listening session? Pete
mike stehr
2 minutes?
mike stehr
I find that with a BBX + 2 pCATs + tubed CDP takes about 1 hour from dead cold to completely settle in and open up. I generally leave the small tubes on and the amps off, so I turn the amps on ahead of listening. Cold tube gear tends to sound 'drifty' and a tad opaque. md Yup. I just fire them up and start listening. It takes 45 minutes to a hour for everything to sound best anyway, so I just get a signal going through them. I dunno, I just don't like a tube amp sitting there idling, I guess I'm weird about that.
Mike Lindsey
I'll fire mine up in the am, and by 10:00 or so I'm ready to put on my first album. Without a doubt, they sound better the hotter they get. Mike
jpm
I leave my ss on all the time. Is that dumb?
sunburnwilly
I leave my ss on all the time. Is that dumb?Nope , The only time I turn mine off is when I'm changing things around or the power goes off . No problems in the past 12 years , Knock On Wood ... Cal Blacksmith
I just turn the amps on and run them. They settle in at about 45 min and by then I am nice and relaxed. When the session is over and I plan to listen more later that day, I will place the power amp into stand by mode and leave the pre-amp on, just turned down. When I am done for the day, everything gets shut off.
Allan Songer
I think you get 90% of the way there within 30 mintues and all of the way there in about 2 hours. It takes 30 minutes for my turntable to settle in speed-wise, so I flip everything on including the turntable and wait about half an hour--ususally I play FM during the 30 minutes. steamer
I would say 45 min. to 1hr. for mine untill the sound is there.I start listening after about 5 min and am always amazed hearing the sound change and get better. Greg
www.records
I just turn mine on and begin playing music. My usual listening sessions are at least a couple of hours, and many times up to 4 hours in the evening. I do notice it sounds better after the amps have been on a while, but the sound while warming up is plenty decent for listening.
steve
I usually fire up the amps about 45 minutes before I head to the music room..the tube CD player and tube preamp are always in standby mode. Even with them warmed up, I think sometimes I hear a difference after music is played thru them for a half an hour or so. Maybe it's the voices in my head..who knows? DrWho
So let me get this straight...it takes about an hour for one's ears to tune out the sound of the tubes? Sorry, couldn't resist the cheap jab [][] Re: keeping SS on all the time....they take a lot less time to warm up and depending on the amplifier topology, you might be surprised how much current some of them draw when idling. wuzzzer
Does leaving an SS amp on all the time hurt anything other than my house's electric bill? My system is in my basement which is usually very cold and over the past couple days I left my HK 730 on overnight and after listening to it for a while it seemed to have a warmer, more natural sound. This is also the only time any amount of warmth could be felt on the top of it, even though it wasn't anywhere close to as hot as my Sony receiver used to get. DrWho
Some people argue that SS devices should always be left on (less expanding and contracting with changes in temperature) Other just as smart people claim that SS devices last longer when turned on and off I don't know how I feel on the subject []
