Looking for great music

I'm not talking Britney, Kanye, or 45-Cent--

So much of the music that I really like is older--40s, 50s, 60s.70s blues, soul, jazz, and I feel so old because I like so little of the new chart toppers--

What new music being made today has a lack of cliche in the lyrics, a sense of adventure in the melody, and a soul that is not aimed at the all-mighty dollar?

What's the really good stuff coming out now? There is some, isn't there?

Well, it really depends on just how "adverturesome" you want to get in your music/melodies.

To be frank, I honostly think to find the really good music that really does have what you are describing in that second paragraph, you have to venture beyond the typical drek that is played on the regular FM radio.

If you are truly the adventuresome type of guy, check out the likes of Sonata Arctica, Vanden Plas, Masterplan, Stratovarious, Vision Devine (as I am typing this, listening to Stream of Conciousness), Kamelot, ARK, Enchant, and Cornerstone. This is just the beginning of what I found to be exactly what I was looking for in music. I've seen a few of these bands live, and I can tell you they are truly playing with thier heart and souls, with some very engaging melodies and thought-provocing lyrics that are anything but "cliche". In conversations with some of the band member's, most notably with Sonata Arctica and Stratovarious, these guys are definitly in it for the love of the craft and not just for the almighty $$$'s.

Beyond that, search the 'net, such as the aformentioned "garagebands" section of this site. Also, check out the Downloads.com music section. That is the old "mp3.com" from it's glory days. There is a TON of stuff on there in just about any genre you care to explore. These are all legal, free downloads.

And if you are willing to stray in what some folks consider a "grey" area legally, check out allofmp3.com. Even if you don't buy a single download, it is a great resource for just exploring and previewing music, and it does not cost anything to sign-up an account.

There is plenty of awesome music out there - you just gotta go out there and look for it, because you certainly am not going to hear it on the the local Clear Channel stations (although, much to my astonsishment, I've actually heard Dream Theater played on one of thier stations while at the ski hill a couple weekends ago! They played "Pull Me Under" from Images and Words. I was totally flabbergasted! Of course, I had to crank it up! [:D])

I second Queens of the Stone age. Also check out the band Clutch. Maybe the self titled Clutch, Elephant riders, anything really. More rockin fuzzy guitar tones here. Blackfield ( prog pop melancholy drearyness that is somehow uplifting). I'm sure more will come to mind. Check out some of blackfield clips. Or even check out the Pain vid. If you like it right click it and save it. Blackfield is a great tune.
