Technics 1200MK2 vs. Denon Dp1200

Recommended Posts

Hello,

Could use some helpful insight...

I'm currently running a Technics 1200MK2 in my main system.

I've enjoyed it for a few years, now.

Recently, I came across a Denon Dp1200, at a local second hand store.

It looks sharp and seem to be in perfect operational condition.

Problem is, I just don't know much about it.

Plus, the price seems kinda high. ($250)

I'm thinking about picking it up and swapping it out with the Technics.

(my main system is comprised mostly of Denon gear.)

I just don't want to pull the trigger on it, before I get all the facts.

($250 is steep for me, nowadays)

-What can you all tell me about it?

-How does it stack up to the Technics?

-Is $250, too much for this piece?

Thanks,

John.

BTW. Both tables have stock tonearms..

I can't tell you anything about the DP-1200, but for many years I've owned an '84 DP-62L which was an exceptional 'table (due to financial difficulties 3 years ago it's now sold). Now I use my dad's mint '79 Technics SL-1700MK2; it too is an exceptional turntable. Just as reliable and trouble-free as my Denon. IMO you can't go wrong with either model, as long as they're in good condition. And $250 also sounds a bit much for the DP-1200...I'd talk 'em down a little first (for that price it should be like new)!

One of my friends has a Denon 1200 and it is a decent table, but I don't think it will be a step up over the Technics. If you are looking to kick things up a notch, why don't you see about upgrading your Technics SL1200 thru some KABusa mods. From what I understand some of them are very beneficial. With the fluid arm damper and outboard power supply being the most beneficial. Kevin is supposed to be very good to talk to and very honest. That is what I would do if I was you. Or maybe even a new better cartridge would be the ticket.

I think you should definately call Kevin and see what he says. He will not try to sell you anything that won't be a major improvement.
