Members Weekly Music Recommendations-March 13

Recommended Posts

Well Spring has broken out all over the East Coast and I'v celebrated

it's arrival by picking up a few new cd's. Always a good place to drop

a recommendation or two in for your fellow members.

Format's simple: Name of artist or group, name of album, type of

music as best you can (rock, blues etc.), and recording format (cd, lp

etc.)

As usual I'll start it off with:

Shawn Mullins, "the 9th Ward Pickin Parlor:, cd, rock/folks.blues

Sorta a dylaneseque type of fellow. Plays great guitar, mostly

acoustic, and pays close attention to crafting a song around the

lyrics, rather than the music. I particularly like "Lay Down YOur

Swords Boys". Very well rcorded, also.

So what do you have for us this week?

I've been out of it recently, and I can't suggest anything I've bought recently this week either, because I've been out of the "music-buying phase" as of late. Trying to save up the funds for a rainy day, you know?

Although there is a mighty interesting article about Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue" recording in the latest issue of Stereophile that, if read, would help you gain a much deeper appreciation for the record.

I have something a little different today.

While the video quality is not a great as technoligy will allow today this historic piece does allow us to see great performances that otherwise just would just not be possible at all.

The performances by the Kinks and Animals alone make this is a must have DVD. With over four hours of video on a single DVD you will find yourself entertained for hours on end.

Hullabaloo, Vols. 5-8 (1965)

Format: Black & White, NTSC

DVD Release Date: May 22, 2001

Run Time: 270 minutes

# DVD Features:

* Available Subtitles: English

* Available Audio Tracks: English (Dolby Digital 1.0)

* Seven complete television episodes (2-16-65, 9-27-65, 10-25-65, 11-1-65, 11-15-65, 3-28-66, 4-4-66)

* 18 bonus performances

* Digitally remastered audio

* Segments hosted by the Beatles' manager Brian Epstein from London

* Menu selections by program or by artist

"A wonderful look back at thei'Swinging 60's' with fashion, dialog and plenty of music!"

Unlike anything you'll see on television today, the vintage show Hullabaloo featured live performances from some of the most popular musical artists as well as up-and-coming stars. Airing oniNBC-TV (1965-1966), the network didn't realize the value of the show and discarded most of the video masters.

Fortunately, the shows have been salvaged from black-and-white kinescopes and the audio has been digitally restored so that we can savor the original performances from legendary artists including:

Frankie Avalon

The Beau Brummels

Chad & Jeremy

Petula Clark

The Everly Brothers

Marianne Faithfull

Freddie & The Dreamers

Annette Funicello

Dobie Gray

The Kingsman

The Kinks

Brenda Lee

The Lovin' Spoonful

The Outsiders

The Rolling Stones

Soupy Sales

The Shangri-Las

Del Shannon

Joe Tex

The Toys

We Five

The Young Rascals

The Zombies

and many more!

It was also fun to see Soupy Sales with the pie in the face but hey...

he sang too. Some may not remember but the Soupy Sales show was one of

the most popular shows on TV for a number of years.

Really can't find much new stuff that I like, so let's stay with Classic;

Jerry Lee Lewis; The Sessions, recorded in London; reissued CD

Done in 1972 the Killer is backed by a star studded line-up of guest musicians; Frankly, the Best Damn Band Jerry Lee ever played with, or will ever play with. What great covers of "Sea Cruise", "Memphis", "Bad Moon Rising", classic Killer. Trust Me, you have never heard the Killer sound so,well, Jerry Lee Lewis-ish, great piano playing, strong vocals, and just a touch of "wise guy". This is one reissue that was worth the wait. On Lemon Recordings, this guy was one of the main reasons rock became popular, and after listening this, you will know why.Good Job, a great addition to any music collection.

Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac- the complete blue horizon sessions 1967-1969

Cd is remastered sounds pretty darn good. Although I read alot of bad reviews of some of the early Peter Green stuff being horrabley remastered by Warner Brothers. This is blue horizon as the sessions would indicate. It's the white man blues. To tell you the truth I wasn't floored when I first heard it. It is becoming very contagious as I listen. A big reason I make sure I listen to my new cd's a few times so none get overlooked.
