eglivincent Posted April 14, 2006 Share Posted April 14, 2006 Hello All, After twenty years of not having a descent stereo system I'm ready to get back into something. I used to have a set of La scalas powered by a Macintosh Ma6100 integrated amp. As a youngster I absolutely loved it. I used to crank everything from Judas Priest, to the Chili Peppers to Stevie Ray Vaughn. Today I still have the same spirit but I'm a bit more refined. I have a home Theater so I don't need a bunch of channels but want a nice stereo with one set of speakers in my living room (18 x 24') and an alternate set outside to fill in my veranda (cheaper outdoor in wall stuff). I've been looking at the Mcintosh MA 6500 amp and it brings up memories of the good old days (demoed it with dynaudio 220's nice but too much). I've also checked out the Rotel stuff and it seems pretty nice too and a lot cheaper (rb1090?). When it comes to the speakers I get lost. I instantly gravitate towards Belles or Lascala (no room for Khorn) and then think maybe a smaller cornwall would be better, or maybe the new Rf-7 or 83. My goal is nice tunes singing through my living room be it some nice smooth Jazz or the Chili Peppers. I also want it to be clean at low sound levels as well as really crank when I feel 21 again. Any input on systems and speakers would be great, I know every ear is different, and everything should be auditioned in every combination available. Unfortunately I can't find anyone in Portland, OR that has alll these components to put together or borrow so they can be put together. Actually, when I owned a pair of Belles for a time in the early 90's one of my biggest beefs with them was that they tended to sound "dead" at very low volumes--not so with my Cornwalls. You kind of have to decide if you are a two way or three way person as well. I could live with RF-7s perhaps with a high end SS integrated. Any of the three ways I would have to have tubes. As far as LS and Belles; if you feel you may lean in the squacker direction, you will only have long term satisfaction with K Horns or the former 2. Too me Cornwalls are not little. audiocvk Posted April 19, 2006 Share Posted April 19, 2006 If you can, it's best to try and find what your ears will prefer. Klipsch makes some very good speakers in all their line offerings. The Rotel RB1090 is a fine amp. In the Portland, Oregon area: Home Video Library is a Klipsch dealer and very good place and people to deal with. The Good Guys/CompUSA also a Klipsch dealer (near Airport Store) Chelsea Audio Video is a Rotel dealer with the RB1090 in demo room. Ford (the Son) is a great guy to work with and talk to.
