tony
I am in a room that is about 12x15, (my living room in my apt) and i already have a yamaha HTR-5840 and two RF-3's that i scored for about $300 in perfect condition. I have a 32 westinghouse HD flat panel LCD with my computer directly hooked up to it in the middle of it all on a black stand. Its like a 32 in computer monitor, its friggen great. Right now in 2ch stero i love the way it sounds especially when playing techno or house music. at about -30 on the volume there is just no way of going louder with out A. the cops or B. ringing ears. So i am happy about that. However, i noticed that when watching movies my system is lacking an obvious low frequency which i need a sub for and i am having a hard time making out dialogue as well. I am not sure how to place a new center behind my tv? Maybe a tall stand directly behind the TV right above the screen? Mount it on the wall? I really do not want a shelf system around this nice TV. I watch movies and listen to music equally so i guess 2ch stereo isnt going to cut it :/ After some research i found that an RC-3 might go well with my system. or should i go rc-5 and leave room to grow so if i move into a house or bigger living room some day... as far as a sub i really have no idea what to get. My budget: I am willing to spend another $700 for those two items. any input is great and i appreciate the time thanks tony
wuzzzer
Get a Klipsch Sub-12 ($499) and an RC-3 (can be had for around $200 on eBay). The RC-5 will put you way over budget as far as getting a decent sub. The center channel can be placed on a wall-mounted shelf just above the TV.
tony
thanks for the input, I have read up on psw 505 from polk and it dosnt sound too bad... Does anyone have any opinion on this sub? thanks tony
colterphoto1
Welcome to the madness and congrats on your score of RF3. Unfortunately, the lineup goes from RC3 to RC7, there never has been an RC5. There is an RC35 and a newer RC 52. You are quite correct in that a sub is needed for adequate reproduction of the LF found in movie soundtracks, and unless you use the phantom center mode on your receiver, the dialog is probably getting lost. I always recommend getting a bigger center if a perfect match is not available. The RC3 would seem to be right for you, but Ive seen dozens of guys trade them in for the much more robust rc7. damonrpayne
An RC-7 used via ebay or auidogon might still be $

You dont want to limit future screen size because of furniture you wont want to replace. Many new TV stands have places for components & a center speaker below the screen. Or..... You can simply mount the speaker on a shelf or stand behind the TV. It sounds like you're losing dialog because you're attempting to transmit a 5 channel signal with only 2 speakers connected. Your receiver is sending channel output to speakers that arent there. To correct the loss of dialog, be sure to configure you're dvd player output into 2 channels so you dont lose parts of the soundtrack. If you want to add a center??? Either of these work well....RC35, RC52, RC62. Keep in mind that if you add a center, but not surrounds, and keep the DVD player in 5.1 mode...... You'll still be losing the signals being sent to the surround speakers. As for the sub....yep, you're missing a lot if you dont have a subwoofer!! However, if you live in an apartment, be mindful of those neighbors[]
