Locally we've got a little chill in the air, but the music is still hot

when I can draw on my fellow forum buddies for some tunes. Oh yes, and

give away some Klipsch memorabilia while I'm at it.

Format's simple: Name of artist or group, name of album, type of

music as best you can (rock, blues etc.), and recording format (cd, lp

etc.)

As usual I'll start it off with:

Buddy Guy, "Blues Singer". cd, blues

What a superb recording. You want to see what your system can do

this is the one. One of our foremost living blues legends, Buddy

Guy goes "unplugged" on this one, and the result is startling. I

always thought of him as mostly a chicago-style uptempo kind guy, but

this man knows his Delta. Highly recommended.

So what do you have to share this week.

Here's a stack of stuff I've been listening to this past week or so:

Love-Forever Changes CD. 1967. Psychedelic rock. One of the most

overlooked of all the psyche bands from the Summer Of Love. Worth the

price simply for the superb opener Alone Again Or. This track is just

perfect. Arthur Lee is not looking so hot these days and I have a

feeling he may not be with us too much longer so I feel compelled to

"spread the word" about his vastly under-appreciated guitar playing.

Rhythm & Sound w/ Paul St. Hilaire-Showcase CD.1998. Reggae/Dub.

Traditional dub with a modern/minimal twist. Production is simply

impeccable with the Basic Channel guys on board. I've been ranting

about the influential BC guys for years here if anyone remembers. This

collects 5 eps with a vocal and version(dub) represented in true dub

fashion.

Barney Kessel & Herb Ellis-Poor Butterfly LP. 1977. Jazz guitar

legends compliment each other well here. I've always wanted more Kessel

discs and I had no Ellis so I picked this recently and I like. This era

in jazz to me is kinda sketchy so the $2 price tag had me take the

bait. Bass is nice and solid on this one. This one is no Idle Moments.

Quick tempos are abound and lots of jazz "shredding" make this exciting

and never dull.

Bob Mould-Black Sheets Of Rain LP. 1990. Rockin' Indie-Rock. Ex Husker

Du frontman released this post Husker Du and pre Copper. Like The

Pixies or The Replacements? You'll probably dig this. Has the

almost-hit It's Too Late.

Rainbow-Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow LP. 1975. Classic-rock/hard rock.

Ronnie James Dio and Ritchie Blackmore...how in the hell can you go

wrong? This includes Man On The Silver Mountain as well as Catch The

Rainbow which obviously had a huge impact on the stunted-growth singer

as he still refuses to release anything without rainbow references.

Scientist-Wins The World Cup LP. 1982. Reggae/Dub. Nice stuff from King

Tubby's apprentice Scientist. I think he was like 18 or so when he cut

this spliffed-out slab o' dub.

Danielson-Ships LP. 2006. More rockin' Indie-Rock. Take one part Arcade

Fire and one part The Decemberists and you have Danielson. I've spun

this a few times and already like it quite a bit. Two thumbs up and a

twirl!

Bruce Haack-The Electric Lucifer LP. 1970. Crazy, psyche-rock,

acid/electronic-rock. Bruce Haack was a mad genius and I highly,

highly, HIGHLY recommend the documentary Bruce Haack: The King Of

Techno to get a crash-course on his life. He was a Julliard student who

started experimentaing with homemade electronic instruments and

eventually got into teaching children using these tools. There is a

pretty famous Mister Roger's Neighborhood that he guest-starred on that

is still ahead of its time. If you enjoyed the Moog documentary you'll

like this flick. Now back to the album. This was very different than

most of Bruce's work as the themes are VERY dark and apocalyptic. It's

not satanic! Very cool and early use of vocoders in a pop setting. to

boot. Kraftwerk probably ripped them off.

Kinda stuck in the 70's here, but what the hey.........

SANTANA; Caravanserai CD 1973

This is the Santana album that no one talks about, this is the one with no hits, the one that changed the bands direction. Santana had become a hit machine, and I believe Carlos had become bored, and unexcited, time for a change, and change they did. Carlos and drummer Michael Shrieve set out on a new path, listening to likes of Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock, found a new direction to follow, and this album allows us to join them. A nice musical journey full of sounds and energy that are truly amazing. I have never heard better musicians surrounding Carlos, Pro's everyone of them, tight, jazzy, just a great bunch of players. Dual basses, outstanding keyboards, and some of the finest drumming you'll ever hear, Dual lead guitars, what more could you want? End of the day, lights turned down, cool one in hand, a smoke, whatever, Caravanserai playing on the speakers, ah yes..................

Michael Shrieve,Graham Lear, great drummers, Carlos always with great drummers.

Delbert McClinton--

Cost of Living and Nothing Personal -- blues-country-rock sung by a raspy soulful-smooth vocalist that's been in the game for more than 30 years? for 40 years?

Great stuff--too many highlights on both to mention --I took out a couple songs and put both on a CD -- and it hasn't left the player for several days--recommendation off this forum--thanks!

Theryugobuddy; If you don't have it You must get Delbert McClinton Live, a double cd set, what a set, what a band, Delbert, Delbert, how did I miss this guy all those years? It is really one of the best live recordings I've ever heard, sonic quality next to none. Sorry, didn't mean to jump in.

First time poster long time watcher of this thread. Since we are stuck in the 70's

Janis Joplin "The Essential" a double CD

All remastered greatest hits type of CD. I picked it up at the used CD store last week. I already had the greatest hits CD so some of the tracks are duplicates. They also threw in a few that weren't on the greatest hits. Same good raspy voice and blues sound.

Oldbuckster and Ugobuddy, oh yea about Delbert. He still has it as his last CD shows.

I'll check out "Live". I have Austin City Limits and it is also a good CD. I think I have 5/6 of his CD's and they all have something great to offer.

I finally broke down and bought Billie Holiday "The Complete Verve Recordings". A 6 CD set with over a 100 songs. I have only managed to listen to one CD so far and it was great.

It seems the only time I would hear her was in a bar, so this is the first chance to sit in the "sweet spot" and just sit back and listen.

I can see alot of songs going on mood CD's.

I've been listening lately to ZZ Top "Antenna". Put out in 1994, this cd is nothing but good ole bluesy Rock with great guitar & drums. Pretty much same ole ZZ Top here... no surprises, which is a good thing! A favorite track of mine on this disc is "Breakaway"

Welcome aboard the thread Merkin. I've only got Janis on lps but even after all these years she gives me a thril, even though I thought her band was pretty bad.

I could not let this slide by; Janis Joplin NEVER had a great band behind her, Big Brother, quite frankly, STUNK, atleast Full Tilt Boogie was a better band, but not a great one. If she ever had a great band, who knows where she would have went.

Blue October "Foiled." A hugely ecclectic rock CD that would disappoint anyone looking for an album solely consisting of tunes like their current radiohit "Hate Me." Their style ranges from typical angst-rock to almost power-pop, twangy folk to indie singer-songwriter melodies. It truly is a musical journey that, if taken, proves to be luciously rewarding.

She Wants Revenge "She Wants Revenge." Modern/Progressive Rock CD with a foot towards electronica and a nod towards goth. Influences most apparent are from Depeche Mode and early Brit punkrock. Some even cite that She Wants Revenge "out-Interpols Interpol."

Okay, has anybody heard of Sasha Dobson ( http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/sashadobson ) ?? I caught her playing last night at Banjo Jims last night (East Village, NY) as part of the"Sloppy Joannes". She sang and played the acoustic guitar. Norah Jones was playing electric guitar and the other girl that usually plays the flute w/ NJ, was playing bass. A little different (not jazz, more honky tonk/country feel); they ALL can sing (doh!) and can ACTUALLY PLAY ... pretty damn good I mean! They played lead in to Van Hayride. Good times.

One of my all time favorite horn players is back!

Last year some great re-masters of some of the best Herb Alpert music was released.

Well in the last few weeks we have even more goodies!!!

On April 4, 2006 the Herb Alpert - Live at Montreux 1996 DVD was released.

Then on March 7, 2006 Herb Alpert released "Whipped Cream & Other Delights Re Whipped". This is not the same as the original work that Herb Alpert did. Some of the samples are in the links provided below and they sound good. While I still love the original classic "Whipped Cream" this one is a must have CD as well!

I ordered both items tonight and should have more to say in a few days when the items arrive. But for now the samples say Herb is still around and doing fine!

Herb Alpert - Live at Montreux 1996 (2006) (DVD)

8. "Side Steppin'"

Trumpeter Herb Alpert is one of the most successful instrumental artists in American music history. He is also a successful businessman, having founded A&M Records with Jerry Moss and later, Almo Sounds. On top of this, he has exhibited as an artist, produced shows on Broadway and established the Herb Alpert Foundation for arts education.

This 1996 performance at the Montreux Festival features Herb Alpert together with the Jeff Lorber Band in a sparkling performance of Alpert's biggest hits. DVD highlights include performances of "Spanish Flea," "This Guy's in Love with You," "Rise," and many more.

Here is one review:

HERB ALPERT SOUNDS GREAT!

This is Herb Alpert's first appearance on DVD and if you are a fan, you'll definitely want to add it to your collection! If you haven't heard Herb's music before, then give this a try. Herb has never sounded better and teaming with Jeff Lorber's band was a great choice. He is the "A" of A&M Records and truly a legend in American music.

Here is one review:

Herb Alpert "Re-Whipped" Delights!

Herb Alpert still plays great trumpet! He lays down new trumpet melodies and counterpoint on these re-mixed tracks from the original "Whipped Cream & Other Delights" album. It sounds to me like Herb's Tijuana Brass meets Herb's jazzy solo sound. If you are a Herb Alpert fan, you won't want to miss this new CD! By the way, there is a new hot looking babe in a lather of cream on the cover.

Hooker 'n Heat

John Lee Hooker, Hooker & Heat, CD, Blues

John Lee hooker on his own is the man. When he got together with Canned Heat for a double album it get's "double good". The version of "Boogie Chillen No. 2" on CD2 is about 15 minutes long and worth the price of admission alone. One of my favorites.

Boogie Chillen!

Thebes, Nice choice on Buddy Guy. His club, "Legends", is right down the street from where I work. Excellent guitar player and singer.

Dirty Dozen Brass Band "Buck Jump". CD

Combination of Funky New Orleans Style Jazz, Blues, R& B

Produced by John Medeski (Medeski, Martin, and Wood), tubas, organs, drums, and lots of POWERFUL brass. Funky and lots of fun to listen to.

From a review on Amazon -

Amazon.com
Having dropped the "Brass Band" part of their moniker for their disappointing
Ears to the Wall in 1996, the Dirty Dozen return to their former, fuller-named persona for Buck Jump. And it's a relief. The band is in full bloom from the opening, funk-fueled track, even if the old snare-bass drum marching format gives way to a more standard drum kit for much of the session. With production from John Medeski (he of the vaunted groove outfit Medeski Martin & Wood), the DDBB steps up to blow on a wild array of songs, from "Run Joe," long an item for Louis Jordan, to a feverish read of Marvin Gaye's "Inner City Blues." There's a great balance struck throughout the CD between the old school march-rhythm rave-ups and their more complex compositions that began coming to the fore on the excellent Open Up! Medeski has the whole party right in your face, too, from virtually the first seconds, when the horns blow brightly and never back off. --Andrew Bartlett

Good stuff, and did I mention TUBAS
