RF - 7 Help?

Recommended Posts

To All,

I am really dissed by these speakers. I am the product of two opera singers and can hear. My question is how do you correct them.!? They are great on highs and right on the money on lows. Where is the mid????? ( My perspective )

Has anyone modified the x-over and added a mid? If so, what mid and mods. to the x-over did you do? I can read/understand schematics/pictorials.

Any help would be appreciated.

Try giving DeanG. a shout, he reworked my crossovers. It will make a very big change in the sound of your 7's and is worth every penny and the effort involved. He can send you simple detailed instruction on what to do.

Again, it made a huge difference in the sound and after hearing them I had him do my old Kg 4.2's and now they are much better.

Welcome to the forum and good luck.

Waycoolone,

Welcome to the forum. I have heard DeanG's RF-7 crossovers and they

sounded very good. I would suggest to go there first before trying to

add a mid driver to the RF-7. I think the crossover option would be

more likely to offer a successful outcome.

One thought though, on subjective preferences. It occurs to me that

upon first hearing the RF-7, my impression was positive and the DeanG

crossovers made it better.

Since your first impression of the RF-7 is that they are extrememly

lacking in performance causes me to wonder if you would be pleased with

the difference the crossovers can make. While the difference is an

improvement, to my ears, crossover changes effect rather small changes,

even in improvements. The changes while pleasing are not huge.

My preference in Klipsch speakers is the Heritage sound. I just really

like the open realism and live sound of the Heritage line, from Heresy

to Khorn, they sound fabulous to me.

I wonder if your impression of the RF-7 might simply indicate a

preference, perhaps yet to be discovered, for the Heritage sound. Mr.

Paul Klipsch used to sit in the symphony with his eyes closed for two

hours just taking in the music. This is the kind of ear of the person

who voiced the Heritage speakers brought to bear on his work.. He knew and loved the sound, what it

really sounded like.

Have you had the opportunity to audition any speakers in the

Heritage

line? I would strongly suggest this before investing further in your

RF-7s. If you are an RF-7 person and like the sound, you would love

DeanG's crossovers. He does great work. If you are someone who strongly

prefers the Heritage sound, even with new crossovers, you still won't

have the sound you crave.

There are some folks who have a strong preference for the RF-7 sound,

others do not and strongly prefer the Heritage sound. The best

next step would be determined by which of these you might be.

Some RF-7 owners have found that an appropriately suited receiver/amp will bring more of a midrange boost. Even though they are efficient speakers they do have an unusually low impedence dip (2.8 ohms) and the amplification system needs to be able to handle it.

What you are driving them with and the effect the room has on the sound is something you may want to consider first. What other speakers have you used and liked, with what amplification? Have you changed the position of the speakers, adjusted tone controls, etc?

Replace the series capacitors on the HF board with high quality metallized polypropylenes. I prefer Auricaps or Kimbers in this part of the circuit. The values are 12uF and 5uF. All of the part values you are replacing are clearly marked, so you don't need a schematic. Replace the 18uF value for the notch circuit with a Dayton Audio or Janzten Audio. There is a single 16uF value on the LF board -- you can use a Solen there. Replace all resistors with 12 watt Mills non-inductives. To do both boards, you will need to order two 2 ohm, and four 1 ohm. If you bring down the horn's resonant peak a bit more, you'll hear a better balanced speaker with perceptibly better midrange and bass. This involves paralleling a 10 ohm resistor with the 2 ohm resistor in the notch circuit. Regardless of what anyone says following this post -- don't cheat the series caps in the HF section.

Overall I prefer my RF-7s. However, I feel the midrange in my RF-25s to be more pleasing. The mids seem brighter and more realistic than the smoother RF-7s. I don't listen to them in the same room so room acoustics could be having an efffect.
