Clint Phare
Anyone make it a point to have their ears cleaned out by the doctor on a regular basis? I had my left ear blocked up a few years back and went to the doctor. He cleaned out my ear with a big syringe filled with water and I could not believe every little thing I was able to hear after that. So I started thinking- maybe as a proclaimed audio nut- I should have my ears cleaned every year or two? Anyone do this or is this just crazy thinking? ------------------ Just who is Dylan's Jokerman anyways?
cc1091
ear wax remover is available at your local pharmacy. Probably cheaper than a trip to the doctor.

discorules
Hey Clint. I've been saying the same thing for the last few years. I had a ear labage several years ago and like you I couldn't believe how much my hearing improve all around. At least there's two of us now. Klipschguy
Over the counter ear wax removal solutions are not recommended because they often will not completely disolve the mass of ear wax and can make a soft, sticky mess in your ear. decibel man
Unfortunately, I have degrading hearing in my left ear. I don't know if it will progress, as it seems to have leveled off in recent years. I am only 29 and it is one on my greatest fears of aging. I want to be able to stop and listen to the Klipsches as I get older. I have had my left ear flushed and the process was not fun, mostly because I had an inner ear infection and the whole area was sensitive. I couldn't tell if I could hear better, because I was to busy having an alegetic reaction to the two Codine tablets the doctor told me to take. The whole not being able to breath thing was requiring most of my attention. All I can say is if your children have ear problems, go to a specialist and don't hesitate to put tubes in if recomended. I have a greater fear of losing my hearing then my sight, and that is not just because I am a stereo geek. I have traveled and seen enough, I just like listening to people, music, and life in general. JT
T2K
Good point,Clint! There are many of our brothers on this board that need to follow your advice. Most notably, those that cannot hear a difference between a good quality speaker wire and ordinary zip cord. Mike Lindsey
I have mine flushed out once a year at one of those walk-in clinics ($10 co-payment). I have always had a problem with wax buildup and have been told by everyone, "do not go sticking q-tips into your ear!" Every doctor I have ever spoken to says it's the worst thing you can do. After flushing them out, I can't believe the difference! If you listen to loud music (as I do), your ears will automatically build up wax to protect your ears. After time, it gets so clogged you have to get them cleaned out. One warning however, it's pretty disgusting what they pull out of there. edster00
A very good way for a DIY ear job ( ) is with a water pick set to a pretty low pressure. I had an ear infection one time and that is what the Dr. used to clean out my ears. He said that it was perfectly OK to do it at home, just not to use a real high pressure. I use warm water with a little hydrogen peroxide added. Works great and avoids trips to the doc! ------------------ Ed W

ckt
I "boil" mine out about every two months with hydrogen peroxide. I have to turn down the treble about 3 db, after cleaning. When the treble comes up by 3 db - time to clean the ears ! This message has been edited by ckt on 11-10-2001 at 03:11 AM
Olaf
I had a blockage in my right ear several years ago. It was so bad that I was getting dizzy from it. I went to the doctor and he tried to remove it but couldn't so he sent me to the emergency room at the local hospital. There,I was seen by an ear specialist who had to dig it out with a small,spoon-like implement which was very uncomfortable. It took almost an hour and he was concerned that they may need to do surgery to remove it. Fortunately,on his last attempt,it came out. It was such a large mass and he said he never saw anything like it. He took it around in a little basin and was showing it to the rest of the ER doctors. He then told me that they decided to save it because it was the largest they had ever seen. Now I clean both ears with peroxide every other month and I have had no problem since. I never noticed that my hearing in my right ear had eroded. If I hadn't got the dizzy spells it could have been worse to the point of surgery. When that 'big thing' was removed,it was like getting a brand new right ear. :-)
Clint Phare
How safe is it to clean your ears with hydrogen peroxide? Seems to it might be harmful. At one of the natural medicine stores near me the sell " ear candles ". You light one end with a lighter and lay down and put the other end in your ear and it is suposed to suck the wax up into the candle . ------------------ Just who is Dylan's Jokerman anyways? TheEAR
Some funny stuff going on in here. Well when I started to buy the High-End gear I wanted to audition the Wilson WATT/PUPPY at its best and I used a Q-Tip to remove any exess wax from my ears. After cleaning ONE ear I inserted the Q-Tip in my right ear and when I removed the Q-Tip...no more cotton! I was very disturbed by this.I went to the local clinic and they washed the inside of my ear and removed the damn cotton with some other unwanted guests! I was in panic, lost some lower bass in the right ear!Damn and I could not even adjust the gain What I heard better where the mids and the highs! Now I could hear the upper range better...from the right ear. Went back to the clinic and got my left ear cleaned to balance things out.Untill now all is good its +/- 0.5dB from 16Hz to about 17KHz...18KHz point at -9dB with severe roll off afterwards. John Warren
don't chemical clean them too often, ear wax serves a purpose, its a thermal insulator and protects the ear drum from dehydration. the wax is also a barrier to virus, bacteria, skin mites. Ear candles, yeah right...I'll stick with the DIY Q-tips...but I am interested in the Hydrogen peroxide process. ------------------ My system(s): KLF-30's Bi-wired KLF-C7 (2) KSP-S6's (2 Pair) KSW-15 Front Sub KSW-100 Rear Sub Chorus II's Monster cable 14 gauge in-wall cable Audioquest interconnects Niles SPS-4 speaker switch box Niles wall plates Niles in-wall volume controls Marantz SR-8000 Toshiba SD-4205 5 DVD changer Pioneer PDF-1007 301-CD changer Mitsubishi 35" TV Mitsubishi VCR Pioneer VSX-608 Multi-room amp for Outdoor deck Polk All-weather AW2's deck speakers Panamax DBS-8 Surge Protector Klipsch IC-525's in Master Bath 13" Sony Wega in Master Bath 1 Lava Lamp for Ambience Fridge full of beer and plenty of Don Julio, Jagermeister and Jim Beam
Steve Phillips
I've been told by ear specialist that one of the worst things you can do to your ear is clean it with a Q-Tip.A bit of the cotton will stay in there and build up over a period of time. Then it's a trip to the Doc and a cleaning. My ears would start topping up when I slept and sometimes I couldn't hear my alarm when time to get up.Had my ears cleaned and had to where plugs for a few weeks at work till I got used to it. I'm 50 and can hear very well.Maybe better than most. I want to be ble to listen to my K-Horns for a long time,so i take good care of my listening devices. justin_tx_16
i use hydrogen peroxide also. some ppl i know have done the wax paper thing, you make a cone out of it, the small end towards you ear, light ht elarger end and melt the wax out... sounds like that would damage your ear the most. any one ever done that? ------------------ -justin I am an amateur, if it is professional help you want email Amy or call her toll free @ 1-888-554-5665
ckt
I basically lay on my side and drop a small amount of hydrogen peroxide in the lid of the bottle. Then drop into ear. Let it go a couple of minutes and dump out to a towel. Then repeat one or two times, until it does not fizz anymore. Then turn over and do the other ear. Most hydrogen peroxide is so duluted now days, that you can use it strait. My freq response is 300 to 3000 +/- 0.0001 db when I get thru....!
