thebes
I am wiped out by the heat and the the forum is acting funky again so I'll make this brief. Sorry guys don't have my usual energy level at this moment. Oh by the way I lucked into a copy of "It's A Beautifull Day" this weekend, was one of my favorites back in the day and I'm very happy to have it in my collection. Format's simple: Name of artist or group, name of album, type of music as best you can (rock, blues etc.), and recording format (cd, lp etc.) Jimmy Cliff, "The Harder They Come", reggae, lp Peter, Bobby, Jimmy and Toots the four gods of reggae. Jimmy does do a lot of "dance hall" dub type stuff but this record is his best effort. the movies not to bad either. Thebes recommended. So what do you have to share this week? nicholtl
Thom Yorke "Eraser" - Progressive/Experimental Rock LP/CD. Legendary frontman of the band Radiohead, Yorke's tunes come as no surprise. They're melancholy, layered with blips, beeps and synth, complete with his soaring falcetto and ambiguous lyrics. For any fan of Radiohead, this is a must. For anyone looking for music where you'll consistently discover something new upon each subsequent listen, this is a must.
sputnik
(My wife gave me that Jimmy Cliff cd when we first met - nice memories there) Here's my recommendation: Tangerine Dream - 220 Volt Live I'd forgotten how much I liked this this particular Tangerine Dream album until I played it again last weekend. It's from the early 90's but has all the power of what they were putting out in the 70's without the, sometimes weird, discontinuities. Very cohesive and compelling. It's easy to get swept up by this one. (image from Amazon)
oldbuckster
Reggae you want, Reggae you shall get, Mon.................. NATTY DREAD ; Bob Marley and the Wailers............CD.........1974 In my opinion this is Bob's greatest piece of work, very political in it's content, songs about life in the REAL Jamacia, not the beautiful tourist part of the country, but life in Trenchtown. there is not a bad song on this album, every one Top notch writing, and performance. 1. Lively Up Yourself ; What a way to start an album, great song 2. No Woman, No Cry ; One of Bob's greatest songs 3. Them Belly Full (But We Hungry) ; Enough said 4. Rebel Music (3 O'clock Road Block) ; got to hide my little herb stock......... 5. So Jah Seh ; catchy little tune 6. Natty Dread ; another little ditty 7. Bend Down Low ; A song straight out of the Gospel, great song, makes me dance around (no comments) Bend Down Low, let Me tell You what I know..........Ya Mon......... 8. Talking Blues ; another great song 9. Revolution ; Bob knew what was going on............. That's it, bottom line, this is the Bob Marley album everyone should own, the man was a genuis. When I first became aware of Bob Marley, and purchased the Burning Album, people would snicker at me, they don't snicker anymore. As much as I love Rock n' Roll, Bob Marley is the only picture of a star I have in my house....................Bob will always live in my Heart......................This album belongs in any collection... synthfreek
Here are a few: In keeping with the reggae theme I'll throw in a release by the Basic Channel guys titled Rhythm & Sound w/ Paul St. Hilaire-Showcase-1998 CD-Burial Mix Records. Once again an absolutely top-notch production from the former minimal techno duo who produced all the classic Basic Channel records. For the past 8 years or so they've been producing some of the world's finest traditional dub. In true reggae/dub fashion each tune is followed by a "version" which is a dubbed-out rendition of the same track. Cavernous dub bass and spaced-out effects are a-plenty. Good stuff! Teenage Fanclub-Bandwagonesque-1991 CD-Geffen Records. What a straight-up GREAT rockin' album. Big Star meets Nirvana maybe? I know this was one of Kurt's favorite albums ever so that's usually a good thing. Check out some clips. Coil-Hellraiser Themes-1987 CD-Solar Lodge Records. This is one for Halloween night. Clive Barker commisioned Coil to score the first Hellraiser movie but this stuff scared test audiences so much that the studio pretty much forced him to tame it down and hire a more "traditional" composer(or so the story goes). These tracks are the unreleased themes. Super-creepy instrumental shorts that will scare the crap outta ya kids. Good luck finding it though. Jandek-Chair Beside A Window-1982 CD-Corwood Industries. From the undisputed king of "outsider music". For the unititiated I urge you to go to the wikipedia entry for either Jandek or "outsider music" and become entrenched in the weirdness. The outsider entry has a link toward the bottom with 365 days of audio links to weird stuff. This is what I live for. Jandek is a world-famous recluse who has never granted an interview, never performed in public...crap, he's never done ANYTHING except make about 50 of the craziest albums you've ever heard...until this past year when he performed a few live shows to everyone's surprise. He is considered a GOD in the underground music community and I know you'll hate it. Give it a whirl. This is Jandek.

capo72
Sublime --Gold It's kind of an all songs collection from this Reggae / Rock/ Dance Hall band. 42 songs on 2 discs. There are some real treasures in there from a band who's talented front man left us way too early. Jeremy

Rob, I'll write a full report. I love Steve Miller! I went to a concert late 90s at the Tweeter Center in Mansfield Ma. Great venue.. and heard Steve put on a fabulous show.. he played an hour or more, then invited Warren Haynes who was the opening act from Government Mule up to do a blues break with him. They played/jammed together for 45 minutes, and then he played another 90 minutes before closing the show. ...I finally got my money's worth from a Rock Star!! Steve is a true musician too. He had a great band that tour. I hope the DVD is as good. I've been waiting for one from him. Regulation motorcycle music I know the Zombies were just a short flash in the pan, but it was good stuff and a great flashback. ...little piece of rock history.
