fanplant
Hi Everyone I started a new thread to hopefully get some more opinions (i posted this in Re: Q-man's University Classicthread). I built a university classic 20 years ago in high school wood shop.Sadly I never loaded it or built a match. Now that I have a 5.1surround system I would like to use it as a sub woofer. I have a Bogenmosfet 100 watt amp and now need a 15" driver. On to my question...What driver wold make my classic a tight sub woofer. I suppose I couldmake a spacer ring if the driver extends past the mount (since it isrear loaded). I would love to go cheap but I realize I might have tospend something to get something. Parts Express seems to have quite acollection here: http://www.partsexpress.com/resources/indexes/sb_guide.cfm Ihave a C15W but last time I looked at it the surround was rotten. Ican't see why I can't use a modern driver since I'm just looking for a"eviction box" (my pet name for any sub woofer) Ive done some research. Looking at the testingdone on the C15W in this thread:http://forums.klipsch.com/forums/thread/673112.aspxand this jpg:http://forums.klipsch.com/forums/storage/3/673714/C15W%20woofer.jpgand figuring the SPL @105dB 1W/1m using the calculator here: http://www.bcae1.com/speaker.htm Looking at Fs, Xmax, Vas, and sealed volume the speaker's below would be okay. The original C15W Vas is 232L to 286L which converts to 8 to 10 cubic feet. My figuring the best match for the C15W would be these twospeakers:EV EVX-155 15" EXTENDED LF SPEAKER $386http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=294-560and USHER 15PA 15" PA DRIVER $230http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=296-632 However in the interest of my wallet and my intentions tohave a serious subwoofer I think the speakers listed below would be a goodmatch for my needs. DAYTON DVC385-8815" DVC SERIES SUBWOOFER $127http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=295-190DAYTON TIT400C-415" TITANIC MKIII SUBWOOFER 4 OHM $199http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=295-420 DAYTONRSS390HF-4 15" HIGH FIDELITY SUBWOOFER $160http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=295-468 None of them seem as efficient as the C15W and I will haveto make a spacer for some of them. I do realize that speaker specs can't always be trusted and this might be a crap shoot... Any help and or comments would be appreciated. sheltie dave
Fan, the 15CW comes up on EBay on a regular basis. You can get one for $60 - $100 almost every time so I would jump on an original first.
Q-Man
Subwoofer???? This University base horn is hotter then the Klipschorn and LaScalla, it is about 107 or 8 db vs. 104db. It is also cleaner sounding. But it drops off fast below 50 or 60 Hz. I don't remember the exact number, I would have to look at my old notes. If you want to use it to cover the range between 50 to 120 Hz. it will do a great job. Then get a POWERFULL sub to handle below 50.

sheltie dave
Like this one, $50 BIN... Needs a refoam, maybe. http://cgi.ebay.com/UNIVERSITY-C15W-WOOFER-15-IMPEDANCE-4-8-10-20-OHMS_W0QQitemZ300285244228QQcmdZViewItemQQptZVintage_Electronics_R2?hash=item300285244228&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1205%7C66%3A4%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318%7C301%3A1%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A200
fanplant
Thanks Dave and everyone reviving an old thread. I have ac15w that fell apart from age in my parents hot attic. A friend of minerefoams so that is not a problem. I was looking for a driver I couldreally abuse and get myself evicted . I'm getting the feeling from Q-manbass range is more a component of the cabinent than the driver. So I guess any chunky woofer will do what I need? John Warren
I'm getting the feeling from Q-man bass range is more a component of the cabinent than the driver. The Fs of the C15W is about 60Hz, it will roll-off below 60Hz at either 12dB/oct for sealed or 18dB/oct for a vented enclosure. With low power dissipation and limited excursion capability it's more like a mid-bass driver. It's a tube era driver, designed to handle 10-20W amplifiers. The adhesive used to join the vc to the cone at the cone apex is very brittle and prone to cracking. The surround on the original is latex coated paper, no foam. If you want a real woofer buy a McCauley 6242.
fanplant
Hi Guys Searching is over. It turns out the C15W in my parents attic was not bad. The diecut cardboard scraps from the origanal box stuck to the surround but it was no big deal. I'm putting Band-it red oak veneer on the cabinet and have photos here: http://picasaweb.google.com/fanplant/UniversityClassic# I will add more photos as I progress. Thanks everyone here is it finished:
