tommyboy
My wife and I just ordered a HD DVD player. I currently use a Monster optical cable on our DVD player. Will this work for HD, or do I need to get something else? I want the absolute best audio, so which wire is best? My receiver does have HDMI if that matters, but not the TV. Thanks in advance. sfogg
Best possible audio is multichannel high resolution LPCM over the HDMI connection. Next best is the 6 channel analog outputs from the player. Typical S/PDIF (toslink, coax) are the worst on HD-DVD. HDMI/analog you can get the full resolution of the new sound formats. Over S/PDIF you get a lossy compressed (DTS) version of the high definition formats... sort of like the difference between an original CD and a MP3 of the song. tommyboy
My receiver has HDMI, but not my TV. Can i run a HDMI from the dvd player, to the receiver, and still run component wires to the TV? Or does HDMI carry the video part as well? Or would my best bet be to get the 6 channel analog wires? Thanks
wuzzzer
HDMI carries video and audio in a digital format. With your current setup, I believe the way you'll have to hook everything up is component video to the TV (or to the receiver and then to the TV if you want your receiver to be able to switch video sources) and then either 6 channel analog wires or digital output to the receiver. If your player allows, you could also run the HDMI from the DVD player to the receiver and use that for audio only, and then component video from the DVD player to the TV. Or you could just buy a new TV and make everything much easier on us. []
tommyboy
Well, we actually canceled the order. I was reading a magazine, and by the sounds of the article I was reading, it may be better to wait a little while. It sounds like they're coming out with some new sound formats. Plus, hopefully they will be like regular players when they came out, then a few years later dropped like half price. We do plan on buying a new TV after we move out of this house in Jun 08. So a little more than a year. I will definitely be getting one with HDMI, seeing as my receiver and dvd player have it. Thanks for the info man
