mark1101
We all know the sting of buying NOS 12ax7s......and have felt it many times. I think most know the popular ones. But........there are some respectable current production ones. What have you tried and what sounds best to you? I haven't done much in this regard but am starting since I have a Jolida JD100. I'd like to know what "cheap" 12ax7 tubes sound good to people. The Electro Harmonix sound pretty good to me. I picked up a pair. I also have a set of Tung Sols but haven't put them in yet. The EH surprised me and I'm actually enjoying them. The EH actually bested some old Amperex Bugle Boys I had in there. Can't explain that....but they did. Anyone try the discontinued EI 12ax7s (supposedly "smooth plates")? What about Sovteks? Anyone like those?

WopOnTour
I bought a pair of the cryo'd EH for my headphone amp... they sound fine (everything else I have is running vintage, but I figured new equipment should get new stacks) [|-)] WOT
Curmudgeon
Groove Tube GT-12AX7-M http://www.groovetubes.com/product.cfm?Product_ID=2100 I've got a pair of these in my Jolida CD JD100 player and they sound great, a huge improvement over the stock Chinese tubes. Very nice tonal quality similar to the Mullards they were designed from.

mark1101
I did not....and of course I have them. So far I have tried Bugle Boys and EH. But over time I will try others and the JJs will get in there. I actually forgot to mention those in the first place.
