WANTED - specs of yamaha m-50 amp

rumble

Recommended Posts

hi

i have a yamaha m-50 power amp and just got a pair of ads L710s which are rated at 6 oms nominal / 4 ohms minimum

and i'm afraid i'll clip the amp and blow the speakers if this amp doesn't have a 4 ohm speaker rating.

i
can't find any specs for the amp anywhere on the internet, and the only
thing printed on the back of the amp is for 8 ohm speaker outs.

other m-series yamaha amps seem to have 4 ohm ratings, so i was wondering if this were true for the m-50 i have.

thanks in advance.

A 4 ohm rating is irrelevant to clipping and possible tweeter
damage. You will clip the amp by driving it too hard. In
fact, driving an amp into a load below its capability will damage the
amp long before the speakers because the amp cannot cool itself while
delivering the extra current a low impedance load requires.

I
have an M-70. The M-70 is rated at 50 watts min. into 8 ohms, 60
watts min. into 6 ohms. It is rated at 70/85/110 watts dynamic
power into 8/6/4 ohms.

6 ohms - 145w

4 ohms - 170w

also has an auto class a switch. when off it functions as class a/b amp

m 45 specs:

8 ohms - 125w

6 ohms - 150w

4 ohms - 180w

also has an auto class a switch when off it functions as class a/b amp

M 50: (my amp)

does not have an auto class a switch.

no specs listed at yamaha's site for the m 50.

(because this whole universe is against me) ;)

<>all it says over speaker terminals is 8-16 ohms.

is this a yamaha "black sheep"?

6 ohms - 185w

4 ohms - 210w

also has auto class a switch. when off it functions as class a/b amp

I use a m-50 to drive paradigm 3se speakers (6 ohm rated, 89db efficiency) without any problems. However I don't think

yamaha intended theamp to be used with 4 ohm rated speakers as there is only a A or B speakers switch . A+B would

be 4 ohms when driving 2 sets of 8 ohm speakers in parallel. Also the impedance of a speaker varies throughout the

frequency range. This amp is probably even more current limited than the m-40 or m-45 since yamaha did'nt

give a power rating for 4 ohms. If your speakers have to low of an impedance, hopefully the amp will go into protection.

The m amps are a great deal though.
