Shoulders as little sore...novice technique...should not matter anymore...now I need me knees to hold up for a week. Cheers! ACE

Took our youngest daughter to the otologist today. Looks like she's going to need a hearing aid in her left ear. Partial hearing loss, mostly in the bass frequencies. She was able to see the audiologist to try a hearing instrument (I guess that sounds better than hearing aid?). She said later she doesn't remember hearing as well as the conversation with the audiologist when she tried it out after it was programmed for her ear.

There's 3 variations of the one she'd recommend for Alea, a small behind the ear model with a little tube that goes into the ear with an ear piece that I think was partially open to allow sound in so the hearing aid would only need to work on the frequencies where her hearing is deficient.

The variations were in "channels" or what we'd call frequency bands like an equalizer. 8, 12, and 16. I think she said there was also a 4 band version available but she wouldn't recommend it for the Alea's hearing loss. Come in 14 colors. The main performance advantages are in the ability to hear better in a noisy environment. Expen$ive. More expen$ive. Even more expen$ive. We'll have to find the $ somewhere as she's had trouble hearing for quite some time.

I shouldn't complain. At least she only needs one. And seems more to be looking forward to hearing better rather than upset to have to get a hearing instrument.

Finished the last of my diet ginger ale.

Good evening Ben,

sorry to learn of Alea's hearing loss. i can sympathize. i'm sure i'm much older than her (i'm turning 50 this summer) but, i have significant hearing loss in both ears. so bad that the specialist made me get a CAT scan and then an MRI of my head to see if I had a tumor. turns out that i'm just old fashioned hard of hearing. As i write this i have headphones on and probably much too loud still). I had triple medical coverage (my job, ex-wife's job, my military retirement) and none of them covered hearing aids. So, i just took comfort in the fact that my amplifier has sufficient power and my Klipsch speakers keep the sound clean. I'd love to have hearing aids, and will someday, but they cost a fortune.

drinking a diet coke and suffering from indigestion. went with a friend to a brazilian bbq joint. all you can meat of all kinds--even alligator. the waiters has it on a big rod and cuts off a hunk right at your table. of course i ate way too much and too fast trying to keep up--they bring a different type of meat by often.

Got surprise at work today. a very, very attractive woman kissed me today--caught me by surprise; but, i sure liked it.

Steve

Ben, sorry to hear Alea needs hearing aids, but it's great she's excited about hearing better! I don't know how old she is, but that will really help her in school, and in her life in general. Too bad the costs are so high! I know you feel as I do, we do whatever it takes to take care of our kids. What color is she getting???[:D]

Steve, I had one of those MRIs, too! When they first suggested it might be a (benign) tumor, I thought to myself, "Great! They can remove it, and I'll have my hearing back!" But (as I'm sure you know), that's not how it works. At best, your hearing would stay as it is. At worst, your face goes numb, you lose your hearing altogether. Ouch!

Oh, black coffee, so far...

Alea is 15. Thankfully she only needs a hearing "instrument" for her left ear. At the doctors office she was thinking standard beige but now thinking turquoise blue. I think she decided it might as well be a nice color. The one recommended is behind the ear with the part in the ear being somewhat open and set to only amplify the sounds she can't hear so the sound would be more naturaly than an in the ear canal model where the ear canal is totally blocked off. She has trouble hearing the lower frequences (I'm not sure of the range) in her left ear.

Me, too! Actually, mine drops off at around 2kHz, down 40db @ 3kHz (I'm now looking at my test results).

Miller time indeed...just got home, anxious to spend some time with my family. I got some shiner bock since I could not get it in Ft. Wayne and listening to the herersy's for 30 minutes or so. Half way done, as of this morning, I am a certified utility pole climber !

I have heard my share of pole climbing and pole dancing jokes in the past week...if it was not raining and on a wet pole, I probably would have lit a cigar and enjoyed the view from the top of the strand...but with the weather I wanted off that darn pole asap.

My father was a pole climber for AT&T (as a summer job) many years ago. On a work crew outing he got cocky and climbed a pole with way to much chewing tobacco in his mouth. When he got to the top, he had a slight slip, swallowed the tobacco, passed out and fell to the ground. He was lucky and only broke a few ribs. He never chewed again while climbing a pole. LOL!

Quiet week...does everyone quit drinking when I am away? Having a nice beefeater and tonic and pondering some new gear in this boring room. Tried to pull the trigger on a pair of cd players and an amp this week, but the cards were not in my favor. Cheers, ACE

Let's us know what you finally decide to get, when the cards are right.

On this fine Wednesday night, I'm enjoying a cold glass (or two) of Rose. Got the house to myself for two days and no one to tell me to "turn it down, please." More later....

Finishing my usual diet ginger ale after polishing off some tasty pork tacos.... from the pork loin we were going to smoke but the timing didn't work out so my wife fixed in the crock pot. Very good. And CHEAP. Pork loins have got to be the best value when it comes to meat.

Have to get another one soon for the smoker.

Been keeping my eye out for an older pioneer stable platter model to use as a transport with my DAC. I had one that died awhile back and my Marantz is on the fritz, so looking again. Fostex and HHB also made pro versions. Found one in Tuscon, but someone beat me to it. Another in florida, but found out it does read 50% of the cds haha.
