kp-115's question

Hey all, I recently won what I believe to be a pair of kp-115's (subwoofers) from E-bay. I have to drive 4 hours to Philadelphia this weekend to get them. Anyways my question is. Can I connect these with my kp-301's together? I know the right thing to do is use an active crossover and separate amps. But I don't have all that right now. They do have passive crossovers with them. I'll be using my Stanton RM-80 mixer with an Altec Lansing 944a which is 250 watts at 8 ohms. Thanx for any answers in advance. Mark

You'll be way down in the impedence department so I'd only do this with an amp stable down to 2 ohms (like Crown) if I was going to push it hard. The KP115 is not really a 'sub', so although you'll have lowered distortion and higher power handling, I'll have to look up the specs at work to see if this will afford you deeper low end.

I know of a setup where they used the KP115 with LS, and they're usually used with 'PA on a stick' with KP201 or KP250 on a pole mount, in which case they do give substantially more bass.

I'm not sure if the KP115's came with it, but a lot of the Klipsch subs come with an input terminal that sends the lows to the sub and then has an extra output where the highs can be sent to another set of speakers. If it doesn't come with one, I'm pretty sure you can purchase a pair from Klipsch for minimal cost.

I dunno if you have your amps yet or not, but you might consider looking into the Crown XTi series amps that already have a DSP front-end built into them:

That would be the KP115 BX (X for xover). If we don't still have them, I can send out the schematic.

And yes, I'm looking at those XTi amps. What size do I need Mike? And can I use it with another amp to biamp in stereo?

I dunno, what's the power handling of the speakers you want to connect to? There is no reason you can't use other amps in your setup, or mix in passive crossovers with other non DSP amps. I can think of a lot of creative ways to combine all the different components, but basically you would want to concentrate on using the XTi's for drivers that would benefit from time delay (in other words, you don't need an XTi on the bass bin since it won't need any delay).

I just got back a little while ago from Philly picking the subs up. They're KP-1000-C2-X's. Serial #'s 97211081 and 82. Now I couldn't find any info on the KP-1000's but the Klipsch vinyl marker on the back says KP-115-X and it says KP-1000-X. So I should assume that these have the same specs? They're in great shape the original owner took out the crossovers but they're included. I didn't get to meet him he just left them out by his garage for me.He went down to the Jersey Shore for the weekend. I'll try to hook them up tomorrow with the crossover outside of the cabinet. I did check them with a meter though and the impedance was correct. Overall it was a great ride except for the massive hailstorm just after the Lehigh Tunnel. I swung by Guitar center to check out those Crown XTI's Dr. Who mentioned but they were closed. I think I'm gonna get one. Mark

Thanx Bill, I found one post about the kp-1000's. Roy says they're KP-115's with carpet. I think these will suit my needs well. I've been looking for subs for a long time and they're fairly expensive. I got these fairly cheap I believe. The E-bay seller misspelled woofer (woffer), and he said they were 14". Overall he had a bad item description. I was going to inform him of that when I picked them up but he wasn't there. I'm gonna try em out with my KP-301's today. Take care, Mark

Let us know how you like them, whamo. Remember that these were designed to go loud, not necessarily low. The K-48-KP woofer is rated to handle 400 watts and will woof 127db all day long. Frequency response is 40 - 400 +/- 3db, (-10db at 32Hz)

While this little guy is great for its intended purpose, PA, it may no go as low as you might like in a home setting.

Keep us posted . . . .

I hooked them up with the crossovers outside of the box and sent the high frequency out to the KP-301's and listened to them all day outside. I believe they'll suit my needs just fine. I'm gonna use them for parties and stuff. My amp has 250watts out at 8 ohms so I believe I could use some more power. I'm gonna put the crossovers back in this week and go that route for now. Overall this setup sounded pretty sweet and my neighbors concur as well. Mark

Hey all, Well I purchased the Crown XTI 1000 it's pretty nice I gotta learn how to use it better. You can hook it up to your laptop and use the System Architect program to adjust the crossover levels, settings, delay etc. Right now I'm using it for the kp-1000's (kp-115's) crossed from 400hz to 38hz. Then it's daisychained out to the Altec 9444a to power the kp-301's. The 9444a is noisy compared to the Crown and I'd like to replace that sometime in the future.

I've got the KP-301's on top of the subs. I think it would sound better with the 301's more elevated. When I do my nephew's graduation party in two weeks I'll do that. I have alot of questions but am working right now. Here's a pic of almost everything I've been gathering together.

Thanx Dr. Who I have a basic design idea for what I have in mind to build the rack. Your links help tremendously. Also thanx for the Crown recommendation too. This unit is very versatile and the build quality is fantastic. Mark

Pro gear with FOUR (sorry) digits means carpet covered.
